Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill turned heads with his goalkeeping performance as he made multiple saves against Germany in their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match in Boston on Monday.
Gill made two crucial saves in the penalty shootout against the four-time champions, including Kai Havertz’s opening kick. He then stopped Nick Woltemade’s effort, while defender Jonathan Tah fired the decisive kick over the woodwork.
It was the first time that Germany lost a penalty shootout at the World Cup.
Who is Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill?
Orlando Gil plays for San Lorenzo in the Argentine top flight and made his debut for the senior team in September last year when Paraguay defeated Peru 1-0.
Gill is a product of youth academies of two clubs in Paraguay: Club 13 de Junio and CS San Lorenzo, and started his senior career with the latter. On 30 December 2023, Gill was loaned to Argentine second division club San Lorenzo de Almagro with an option to buy, and initially played with the reserves.
In January 2025, that team promoted him to their senior team with a contract until 2027.
