There are few forwards who can disappear from a match and still make the decision like Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian spent much of Tuesday’s round of 32 against Ivory Coast on the fringes. There were no lung-busting runs at the back, no flurry of shots, and few moments where he imposed himself on the game. Instead, Haaland was often found helping Norway survive.
«I actually think he is very underestimated when it comes to holding the ball. He didn’t lose the ball once today, and that brings so much to the team,» Norwegian coach Stale Solbakken said of his striker’s defensive work.
The figures paint an unusual picture. Halland registered seven touches in his own penalty area, two more than the five he scored in Ivory Coast’s penalty area. Outside of both areas, he had just 14 touches all evening. His total of 26 was the fewest among all outfielders who started and played after the hour.

Haaland has built a career on proving that football is not a game measured by engagement.
For 86 minutes, Ivory Coast had managed to keep the tournament’s most feared striker under control. Then Patrick Berg delivered a cross into the six-yard box, the defense hesitated for a moment and Haaland was exactly where great goalscorers always seem to be. One touch, goal and a place in the round of 16.
It was his fifth goal of this World Cup, putting him second in the scoring charts behind Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé, despite having played one match less.
Against Morocco he bullied one of the most organized defenses of the tournament and found the net. Against Haiti, he occupied defenders to create space for those around him before getting his own reward. And when Norway needed a winner to keep their World Cup alive, he delivered again.
“He is the greatest goalscorer in the world, there is no doubt about that,” Solbakken said after the match. «Today he didn’t have much involvement, but he had a big chance in the first half and then scored the goal in the match. He is out of this world. He brings calmness and coldness to the team when you have a player like him.»
That is what distinguishes top scorers from every other striker. Many can finish chances, but few can spend an afternoon in near-invisibility before deciding on the one moment that really matters.

«To score five goals in three games at a World Cup for a small country like Norway is amazing, so all credit to him. And no, I wouldn’t trade him for anyone,» added a delighted Solbakken, who became the first manager to secure a World Cup knockout victory for Norway.
The Manchester City forward has now scored in every competitive match he has played for Norway since October 2024, a run that has seen 25 goals in 13 games.
Norway next meets Brazil at the MetLife Stadium on Sunday. The biggest games are often decided by the smallest of margins, and few players grab them like Haaland.
