Ronald Koeman resigns as Netherlands coach after exiting in the 32nd round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Ronald Koeman has resigned as head coach of the Netherlands after exiting in the round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday.

The Dutch succumbed to a penalty shootout defeat by Morocco after a 1-1 draw in regular time, with Issa Diop’s late header canceling out Cody Gakpo’s goal in the second half.

«Last night I made the decision to end my period as head coach of the Dutch national team. We all dreamed of a World Cup in which we would write history. That did not happen. No one is more disappointed about that than me,» he wrote on his Instagram page.

Saying goodbye to mixed feelings. Of course I would have liked to end my time with the Dutch team with a world title. Unfortunately, that dream remained unfulfilled. But above all, pride prevails.

My wife Bartina supported and encouraged me every day to complete my work as national coach, despite her own illness. That shows incredible strength. I appreciate her more than I can ever put into words,” his statement added.

Koeman earned 78 caps as a Dutch international and played two World Cups for the side, in 1990 and 1994. He took charge of the national team for the first time between 2018 and 2020, before returning in 2023.
