At least two people were killed during mass celebrations in Mexico City on Wednesday after Mexico qualified for the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup, according to city officials.
A 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died of asphyxiation, Mexico City’s health minister said, after large crowds gathered to celebrate the national team’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador. Emergency workers were no longer able to resuscitate them.
Authorities have not confirmed local media reports of a third fatality and the investigation continues.
