FIFA World Cup 2026: Beccacece steps down as Ecuador coach after Mexico’s defeat

Sebastian Beccacece bid a fond farewell as Ecuador coach on Tuesday following the 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32, saying he would have liked to continue in the role but had not kept his promises.

Despite entering the knockout stages with renewed momentum after a dramatic comeback win over Germany, Ecuador could not overcome Mexico’s fast start and determined defense.

«Our contract ended with the World Cup. I don’t think we were able to deliver on the performance we promised: to make this the best World Cup ever. Today it’s my turn to say goodbye,» Beccacece said after the defeat in a deafening Azteca Stadium.

«That’s why I have to leave. I would have liked to continue because what I got from the players and management justified the opportunity to continue. But I understand how this works. It hurts, but I think the decision was clear.»

Beccacece admitted that Ecuador were in second place in the first half, with Mexico dominating the game.

“We were outplayed in the first half,” he said.

Ecuador improved after the break, enjoying more possession as they looked for a way back into the match, but the Mexican defense held firm.

“We fought back, but we couldn’t find the goal that would have given us a boost,” Beccacece added.

Despite the disappointment of the elimination, the Argentine chose to focus on the bond he had built with his team and the country during his tenure.

When asked about the legacy he leaves behind, Beccacece deflected the praise to his players.

“The legacy comes from the players because they were the youngest team in Ecuador,” he said.

«I have no complaints, just gratitude towards the people and the players. I have received so much gratitude and affection from the bottom of my heart. The boys gave me two wonderful hours after the match, and that is what we will remember.»
