Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister hints at Portuguese legend’s retirement ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup match

When Cristiano Ronaldo took the field against Croatia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, his sister, Katia Aveiro, hinted at his international retirement just hours before the match.

«Based on the information I have, from a reliable source, he could say goodbye. Enjoy it while it lasts. It won’t be today, but soon. I think this will be his last dance,» Aveiro told SportTV.

Ronaldo, who made his Portugal debut in August 2003 at the age of 18, is comfortably the country’s all-time leader in appearances (232, 86 more than Joao Moutinho) and goals scored (145, 98 more than Pauleta).

The 41-year-old is one of only three players to have played in six World Cups and became the oldest outfield player to start a knockout match at 41 years and 147 days. Although he guided Portugal to its first major trophy, the European Championship, in 2016, the World Cup title has so far eluded him.

However, speculation surrounding Ronaldo’s retirement remains unconfirmed by the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Meanwhile, Portuguese coach Roberto Martinez said before the tournament that there was no doubt about Ronaldo’s ability to play at the next World Cup.

«He has earned it. I have worked with many players who have won a Champions League or a Ballon d’Or, and the next day they lose their appetite. What we have with Ronaldo is an example of a different mentality,» Martinez said. Chain being radio last month.

«I believe having that goal allows for longevity. Of course there’s a genetic aspect, the work he puts in, he uses whatever can help his body and his mentality.»
