Who is Sidny Lopes Cabral, who scored a stunner for Cape Verde against Argentina in the 2026 World Cup?

Cape Verde scored a late equalizer in the round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Argentina, which took place in Miami on Friday.

Argentina thought it had done enough to beat the African nation when Lisandro Martinez fired the ball home after a set-piece in the first half of extra time.

But Sidny Lopes Cabral curled a stunning goal from the edge of the penalty area into the far top corner to make the match 2-2.

The 23-year-old is another member of the Dutch diaspora playing for the island nation. He was born in Rotterdam and went through the youth academy of FC Twente and then Swedish club Helsingborg before moving to Viktoria Köln in Germany.

The full-back played for Benfica in the 2025/26 season, but only made eight appearances during the campaign. He has now completed a transfer to Turkish Super Lig club Trabzonspor.

Lopes Cabral has been playing for the national team since 2023 and this was the fourth international goal of his career.
