Tottenham have completed the signing of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali in a club record deal that could be worth up to £100 million.
The 26-year-old Italy international joins the London club after spending three seasons at Newcastle.
Spurs initially had a bid of around £80 million rejected before reaching an agreement with Newcastle. Tottenham are expected to pay £92.5m initially, with a further £7.5m in potential add-ons.
“I’m very happy to be here,” Tonali said. «People said there were four or five clubs. There was only one.»
“I spoke with the head coach (Roberto De Zerbi) for almost two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium and our football.
«It was like magic because I knew straight away that I had to sign for Tottenham. I have played against Tottenham a few times and have always experienced a great atmosphere created by great fans. I can’t wait to start the season.»
Tonali becomes Tottenham’s second major midfield signing of the transfer window, following the arrival of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United for £85 million.
