Will there be extra time and penalties if the match between Portugal and Spain ends in a draw in the round of 16?

Spain and Portugal were tied 0-0 at half-time at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Dallas on Monday.

The reigning European Championship champions had clear chances when Mikel Oyarzabal, Lamine Yamal and Alex Baena saw their attempts rejected by Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

Cristiano Ronaldo also had a chance to give his team the lead, but Unai Simon blocked his shots on target. Nuno Mendes hit a rocket shot in the 41st minute that rattled the crossbar.

What happens if Portugal vs Spain ends in a draw after 90 minutes?

If the Portugal-Spain match remains tied after 90 minutes plus injury time, the match will go into 30 minutes of extra time, which will be divided into two halves.

If the winner is not determined even after that, a penalty shootout will decide which team will advance to the quarter-finals.
