Michael Olise was shown a yellow card in the round of 16 of the 2026 French FIFA World Cup against Paraguay in Philadelphia on July 4.
The French winger was shown a yellow card in the tense situation that saw tempers flare between both sides when he appeared to have confronted midfielder Matias Galarza.
Replays suggested that Olise had just gestured a ‘finger to the lips’ action to the opponent, after which he fell to the ground without any contact.
The French Football Federation (FFF) has called on the governing body FIFA to overturn the referee’s yellow card.
However, France head coach Didier Deschamps confirmed that the appeal was unsuccessful.
«The yellow card has not changed. We were informed by FIFA this morning and it has been upheld,» Deschamps told reporters ahead of the quarter-final against Morocco.
Olise is still in danger of missing the semi-finals if he takes a card against Morocco in the quarter-finals.
