The quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup are just around the corner. France has secured its place and the other teams will also try to progress. Aided by an increased number of matches, the 2026 World Cup has already seen a record number of goals scored during the tournament, surpassing the previous record by more than 100 goals.
So far this tournament, Argentina and France have achieved the highest scores with fourteen goals, closely followed by Belgium with thirteen and Norway with twelve. However, while all teams have a chance of making it into the top ten, they are unlikely to break Hungary’s remarkable total in 1954.
Here are the highest scoring teams at one FIFA World Cup.

The 1954 tournament featured both top scorers, while the West German team was the second best scoring team of all time. The scoring was more evenly distributed, with the side’s top scorer being Max Morlock with six goals, followed by Helmut Rahn, Hans Schafer and Ottmar Walter, who scored four goals each.
West Germany had to play one more match than Hungary, a play-off against Turkey to determine second place in the group.
During this tournament, the West German team reached the final and defeated pre-tournament favorites Hungary 3-2 against all odds. in a competition later called «The Miracle of Bern». The West German side were two goals behind inside the first eight minutes before a goal from Max Morlock and a brace from Helmut Rahn secured the unlikely victory.
3. France 1958: 23 goals in 6 games
The 1958 French team is third on the list having scored 23 goals during the tournament. In addition to the third-place record, the team also set a new record for most goals by a player in a tournament, with Just Fontaine scoring 13 goals on his own.
