New Hampshire in your own league

In my more than 100 days on the path of the Apalaches, I have not had a loss of words to describe my experience, since I have the last weeks in New Hampshire. It all started innocently, with a walk along the Connecticut river towards lovely Hanover. Quite fast, the land became hard and the opinions are spectacular. Add the unique aspect of the shots administered every ~ 10 miles more or less and will have a section of AT that is different from any other. My son, plus one, joined me for the travel challenge through the white mountains and, together, we approach the most difficult physical experience of our lives.

To the box score

  • Friendly People – 235/235 more croo and guests
  • Interesting wild creatures: 3 types of birds gave us a serenade
  • Errors – 1
  • Injury report: it crossed the unharmed white mountains

We saw so many people while traveling through New Hampshire due to the popularity and beauty of the paths there. A more prominent point was to walk with an ancient guide of the Mountain Clubs of the Apalaches through the presidential mountain range: his ideas on the road helped us appreciate the work that occurs behind the scene to balance the conservation of the fragile ecosystem with the happiness of the hiker.

Since we expand the creature category to cover anything interesting, instead of just the hostile, our meetings have disappointed us. Normally we are not bird observers, but we notice the different calls of three types of native birds of the area. The White Withroated sparrow is our favorite, with its four -grades call. Swainson’s Thrush offered us Whirly songs to walk and Winter Wren gave us the extended reproduction version of our outdoor soundtrack.

Again, this week’s mistake had to do with power along the way. More than 100 days later, I still have no battery energy. The batteries are heavy, so I have sneak up in this part of my team and ended up running my electronic after a few days on the road. In addition, one also had a broken load cable, which never happens and limited our options. He argues that his batteries were very heavy because they were never used! Added to that, my Samsung Galaxy S9 phone (around 2018) has recently stopped loading reliably from any source and frequently eliminates the cell signal when others have no problems. It’s time to invest in more electronic products!

Uploads, ridges and streams

No matter how try to describe the white mountains, I will not do justice, so I will rely on the idea that the photos are the best way to share the experience plus one and I had in recent weeks. Below there are some examples of the many photos we take: look Instagram For more! Most of my photos are from Francia Ridge, so I have neglected Moosilauke, Kinsmans, Presidentials and Carters. All are spectacular too!

Walking through these mountains, the weather is a constant consideration. Our great day in Franconia quickly became stressful when the clouds rolled and made the descent to the Garfield Ridge Sliptery and treacherous camp. We were in a trio of time, trying to establish a camp before dusk, so anxiety was being built, not a great combination of hurry and wet and steep feet. We arrived unharmed and were received by one of the excellent caregivers, which gave us a quick tour and instructions before leaving our tasks.

A very special thing that is worth pointing out: when you are not climbing, walking a crest or descending during a white mountain walk, you are walking along a beautiful babbling stream. It is a good detail that makes this state more magical.

Awesome Francia Ridge!

Cabañas and Croo

Among many other parts of its operations, the APPALACHIAN MOUNTAIN CLUB (AMC) It maintains eight journey cabins between Kinsman Notch and Carter Notch in New Hampshire. The oldest notch cabin was built in 1914 and expanded over time. The largest, the cloud lakes, is 1.5 miles below the summit of the powerful Monte Washington to make the increase more accessible and less risky. Lonesome Lake Hut, a 1.5 mile walk from I93, is above a crest with spectacular views of Franconia. Each has their own charm and challenges for maintenance.

Many years ago, I heard these huts and I was curious to see how they could fit my walk. At that time, I thought I would do the path in sections and the cabins seemed an excellent way to travel through the state with a minimum package weight. I really didn’t appreciate how they worked until more and put on a point to see them on the road. Although minimalist in services (solar energy, there are no points of sale to load phones, toilet composting, without showers, provide a bunk, breakfast, dinner, spectacular configurations and good joy.

Some of the good joys are provided by other guests, through hikers, hikers, families with children, empty nests, we saw them all. The «Croo» staff also offers a good mood in their cheesy sketches that remind guests who do not let a comment card track and complete. These croo range from a staff from three to eleven, depending on the size of the cabin. In addition to the responsibilities of executing the side of the hotel of the operation, package tables are also placed, regularly causing the multiple walk to carry in supplies and carry out garbage. We knew that there was much more in this subculture when we went to another man who wore a rubber chicken in a stick, a hot potato game played between two of the cabins.

Now I understand that these huts serve the community of hikers, even when they are not paid guests. In addition, one and I took advantage of the pass through Hiker and stopped in seven of the water, private, snacks and a short break. They leave the leftover food for hikers, a victory for both sides because any food waste must be packaged. There is also a work program for stay that is coveted by hikers motivated with budget.

Much more than +1

That guest without a name that invites a social event as an accessory for the name named is known as the +1. My son chose the name of the path plus one for his walk with me, since he was the secondary character in this adventure. His role in recent weeks has been much more than an accessory; It has been a critical piece of navigating this land without injuries, adding a healthy reminder to reduce speed and enjoy the event. Many hikers end up leaving the way in New Hampshire for a variety of reasons, a high injury between them. I am grateful for Plus One for pointing out the Tippy and slippery rocks and helping me choose the less risky road by the rocky faces. More than his help with security, I have appreciated the times that he suggested the secondary search, just because there can be an alce in that pond by the blue fire at dusk.

Family hikers of several generations are some of my favorite people to speak because they appreciate how special it is to walk along the path with people who can share those memories once they return to the real world. Blue bear, fun size and more one: three generations together for an epic adventure through the white mountains!

Curiosities of the path

We properly had the six -sides refuge called «Hexacuba» at the beginning of our New Hampshire trip. The perfect complement? A «Penta Privy» of five sides with accents of the pentagon in abundance. Who says that private ones are not fun? Almost all, including the dedicated people who maintain them.

Remember to look for beauty

There is a beauty marked on mountain tops sweep by the wind on the tree line, where few plants can survive and the road must be marked by rocks. The sky is huge and the valleys below show the small «civilization.» I wish I could bottling the feeling of standing in this place.

The state Limerick

We keep some of Vermont miles after Maine, so this Limerick will seem out of service for regular readers. Do not be afraid, there is much to share about Vermont, after Mount Katahdin! New Hampshire redefined my experience in the AT and gave me the confidence to move forward for other more than 800 miles.

New Hampshire

  • New Hampshire was the best test
  • Walking for Franconia was better
  • Great up and down
  • Wet rocks all
  • Now I know I can address the rest!
