- Pinefield Hut (898.6) to Hightower parking (908.8)
- Ascent of 1690 feet, 1506 feet down
Children and older people are more vulnerable to temperature extremes than the general population. That kept hitting my head while fighting today in the heat of 100 degrees. We are older people.
We try to stay safe walking early and drinking. We drank electrolytic water constantly. We had a replenishment stop at a motel scheduled for tonight. We could do it.
Starting early
The weather had been warning of a heat dome for days. We try to be prepared. Yesterday was very hot, but we had rested in the hottest part of the day and we did well.
Last night it was hot, we sweat in our sleeping pads, comforters thrown aside. At 5 in the morning, we stop trying to sleep and prepare to walk. We left the shelter when the sun came out.
Hot hiking
We had a good time, installing in the Shennandoah pattern of qualified ascents from 300 to 500 feet in a row from 300 to 500 feet of descent. Up and down, up and down.
The heat was being built. At 10 in the morning, I was pressing 100. We were both overwhelmed by the idea of more walking hours until we arrived at Elkton tonight.
Resting
We crossed the horizon driving and rest under a shaded road sign. Another through hikers came and dropped close to us. I was very distressed by heat. He called his family and soon announced that he had a transport service if someone wanted a trip. I was leaving the path today.
It surprised us. He had come so far. When his transport arrived, two other hikers who did not know took the opportunity.
Walking
After our break, we move on. The departure of our fellow hiker bothered us. We really feel sorry for him, but also a little scared for all of us. His resignation highlighted how serious heat was.
We continue to move, sweat spill us faster than we could replace it. We needed food, but it was impossible to think about eating. We fix them to put a couple of protein bars, but there are not enough calories to move forward.
Get good advice
We continue to continue as quickly as we could to get to Elkton. We wanted to get out of heat. We had a reservation waiting for refueling.
As the clock crawled forward, the heat increased. Looking at our progress, I was afraid that we were after 6 pm and I wasn’t sure we could even get a transport service.
I called the number that the motel gave us and the wonderful transport driver that would collect at any time.
He said we could be collected before the way to Elkton if we wanted to. I was worried about our security. He seemed concerned about all hikers today in the heat.
Changing plans
We made another round of up and down. We were both dejected thinking about the remaining miles.
I looked at the map. It would be possible to be collected in 2 miles instead of 6. We could add those miles to a future day.
We call the driver of the ferry and agree to meet him in an hour. We could make another section.
Waiting for relief
We arrive at the designated place about 20 minutes before. There was Poisen Ivy on the grass around the parking lot. I went to bed on the parking pavement.
I passed. I had a heat eruption around my socks, elbows and sports bra. Moving was horrible.
The historian was spent. His back was injured. He tried to get to the ground and He decided that a small cat cow yoga could relieve the back of the back with which he was fighting.
After stretching, he turned around and rested against his pack. The pavement felt fresh compared to the air.
Blessed Relief
Our transport driver arrived just in time. It helped us load our packages. As soon as we got on his vehicle, he offered us a selection of sports drinks. We were very grateful. They were cold!
After a brief trip to the hotel, he offered us laundry soap without smell to use at the hotel that had a free laundry.
He said we could pay when he took us back to the road. He also offered a free trip to the city to dinner. We were so expenses and overwhelmed by their kindness that we did not have an answer. He said we only send text messages when we knew what we wanted to do.
Great at last
We register and recover our replenishment. They also had ice. Our room was perfectly great. The shower was perfect and spongy towels.
After showering, we fight for the delivery of a pizza. In fact, they left him, they contacted less delivery, but to the wrong hotel. I was about to give up when the hotel staff saw a driver. Our pizza was found.
We retire to our fresh room. We celebrate cold air riches, water to bathe and drink, and food to eat. In our luxury, we take a moment to remember those who did not have luxury or access to relief. It was a humble moment, and that increased our gratitude for the kindness of those who take care of hikers.
