England Defender Jess Carter says she is subject online to racial abuse at the European championship for women.
Carter came in for a lot of criticism of her performance during the opening loss of England against France.
And part of it has been exceeded, even if the 27-year-old and the lion ribbons have reached the semi-final at Euro 2025.
«From the start of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racial abuse,» Carter wrote on Sunday in an emotional post on Instagram. «Although I feel that every fan is entitled to their opinion about performance and the result, I disagree or think it is ok to focus on someone’s appearance or race.»
Carter, who has made 49 performances for England and plays for Gotham FC, says she will take a step back from social media.
«As always, I am grateful for all the support of the real fans, but I take this measure to protect myself in an attempt to keep my focus on helping the team anyway,» she added.
The football club has contacted the police in the United Kingdom.
«Our priority is Jess and gives her all the support she needs,» said Fa CEO Mark Bullingham. “We strongly condemn those who are responsible for this disgusting racism.
«As soon as we were informed of the racist abuse that Jess received, we immediately contacted the British police. They have contact with the relevant social media platform and we work together with the police to ensure that those who are responsible for this hate crime are brought to court.»
