Women’s Copa America: Paraguay beats Chile to secure fifth place and in 2027 Pan am Games

A stunning stop-time strike by Camila Araguay handed Paraguay a dramatic 1-0 win over Chile in the play-off of Copa America on Monday in Quito in Quito, where the last berth was obtained for the Pan American Games in Lima 2027.

The victory sends Paraguay to his fourth Pan AM games, where it wants to be to exceed his best fourth place from Lima 2019.

«It was a difficult match,» said the 23-year-old Arrieta after the game. «We know what Chile is capable of, but we managed to get through the game and we deserved this victory.»

Chile dominated the property, but failed to create clear opportunities, while Paraguay remained compact and looked threatening on the counterattack by tournament-leading Scorer Claudia Martinez.

Just as the match was intended for penalties, Arrieta broke the impasse for two minutes in the stopping time, her precise low ride that bends the pole before he nestles in the net to seal a heavily fought triumph.

«I had opportunities to go into goal in the game earlier, but I couldn’t repent. I kept trying,» said Arrieta.

«After all the hard work we have done, this means a lot to us. We will prepare as well as possible for the qualifications of the World Cup.»

Argentina will be confronted with Colombia later on Monday in the first semifinal of the tournament, with an Olympic place at stake.

Defending champion Brazil takes on Uruguay in the second semifinal on Tuesday.
