Bev Priestman, who was fired as Canada’s women’s coach for her share in the use of drones to spy on the opposition at the Olympic Games in Paris, will return to the game in Zeeland in Wellington Phoenix.
The 39-year-old English woman, who led Canada to Olympic gold in 2021, has just completed a one-year-old FIFA ban from football-related activities for her role in flying a drone during a closed New Zealand training session during last year’s summer games.
Priestman received a two-year-old deal from Phoenix to coach his women’s side, who ended the ninth of the 12 teams in the Australian A-League women earlier this year.
«We are very happy to be able to welcome BEV in football,» said Phoenix chairman Rob Morrison in a club statement.

“We all know that she has had a period of the game, but we understand the circumstances and we are really comfortable with this appointment.
«This is a step forward in an exciting era for the Phoenix Women’s team.»
Priestman is no stranger to her new home, after he was previously served as director of the football development of Nieuw -Zeeland and married the former midfielder of the football ferns and the current Phoenix Academy Director Emma Humphries.
«Huge thanks to (the club) for giving this opportunity to come back to the game I love, and hopefully to bring a number of special moments to not only this city, but this country,» said the former assistant coach of the Lady Team of England.
«Returning to New -Zeeland and seeing the Phoenix week, week out as the only professional ladies team has been great. We now have the responsibility to fly the flag for this country and do something special.»
