Dozens of verified stork in cliffs with the ocean behind them
Fisherman’s Trail Portugal day 4 It took me from Cavaleiro to Odeceixe, a 30 km stretch that turned out to be my favorite day on the road so far. From the impressive geology of the cliff to the storks that nest on the Atlantic, this day had everything!
Morning light along the path of Portugal fishermen Day 4: Cliffs, layers in layers and the ocean that extends forever. Pure magic of the path.
A long day, but my favorite so far
Today was our biggest challenge on the path of fishermen so far: 30 kilometers at once. We needed to reach Sandra and Oliver, who were still following the main itinerary after shortening our walk yesterday.
We woke up early, packed and reach the road with that light border of nerves that comes with a big day of mile. I wasn’t sure how long it would take us, or how my body would endure, but I was determined to find a constant rhythm and keep moving.
And honestly? This turned out to be my favorite day yet.
BY THE WAY – If you missed my blog yesterday on the path of the fishermen, I would recommend checking it!

The type of path that makes you forget your tired legs. Fisherman’s Trail Portugal Day 4 delivered wild cliffs, rock rocks and that deep blue Portuguese sky. My favorite day so far.
Blue skies and full sun (finally!)
After days of rain and wind, the weather finally turned. Blue skies. There are no bursts. Warm sun in our skin. But, of course, … with stillness comes sweat. And at lunchtime, I had already gone through my full water capacity of 2.5L.
Note for oneself: The body lotion is not sunscreen. My legs paid the price today! UPS.

The path of Portugal Day 4 fishermen arrived with full sun, and a not so gentle reminder that the body lotion ≠ sunscreen. Hydrous? Yes. Protected? Not so much.
Land: A bit of everything
We moved through such a varied land today. Cliff roads overlooking the sweeping ocean. Long walks along the path that did not care: our rhythm collected and the change on the surface felt easier in my joints after so much sand. We got into pine forests and eucalyptus forests, where the aroma of the trees caused the heat to feel a little less aggressive.
And then: cork trees. I had never seen them before and was so excited to know that Portugal is the world’s main exporter. Its cortex is different from anything else: texture, thick, like the armor of nature. I love when hiking becomes a life classroom.

Cork trees seen in the Portuguese trail of Fisherman Day 4, rented, textured and totally unique. I had no idea that Portugal was the best cork exporter in the world. Made of the day of the day!

We had to stop and feel the cortex: rude, textured and very great to touch. Fisherman’s Trail Portugal Day 4 became a complete sensory experience.
Birds, beaches and vinho
Birds today were the next level, so many different calls, colors and species. But the stork definitely stole the show. Their huge nests were perched rightly at the edges of the cliff, with the Atlantic crashing behind them. It was honestly one of the most great things I’ve seen.
We stopped for a while just to see them. I wondered: how do your nests stay there? They are so exposed, especially with heavy coastal winds. And yet … there they were, totally without authors.
I could not help smiling, remembering how the stork were the «baby delivery birds» when we were children. If that is true, they have a rather epic delivery route here.
Around the time of lunch, we arrive at Azenha do Mar, where we finally meet Sandra and Oliver, long before we expected!
They were finishing a delicious shellfish food, and Sandra offered me a sip of their green, cold, slightly bubbly and perfect vinho. You can bet that I will ask for a glass tonight!
P.S. If you wonder what attracted me to the path of the fishermen, I wrote everything about it here!

A storing perched on his cliff nest with the Atlantic behind him, so exposed to the wind, but perfectly at home. One of the best moments of wildlife along the way so far.

A closer look at one of the storks that nest along the cliffs. Fully without otersed by grated waves or strong winds, just doing your own.
That final stretch
The last kilometers were difficult. My legs were toasted, the sun was still burning, and I could feel every step of my body. But having a company made all the difference. We walked together for the final stretch: make me put, laughing and letting the conversation take us through fatigue.
I arrived to Odeceixe feeling proud and exhausted in the best way. All I could think was about food and wine. We registered in our apartment in residence do park, a simple place, but it had a cozy bed and a hot shower, which was all I needed. After rinsing the sweat of the day and sliding to my city’s clothes, we headed to a restaurant called Chaparro.
The dinner was perfect: fresh fish, potatoes, grilled vegetables and cold white wine. After walking 30 kilometers, it was one of the most satisfactory and deserved meals I have had.

30 km later … tired, Sun-Drunk and proud. This is the good type of fatigue.
Today he felt like full color
After 30 km, I can honestly say that after 4 days of hiking, today is the day I fell completely in love with the path of the fishermen.
Today he had everything: great blue skies, dramatic geology, new land, playful moments and the quiet magic of the storks that nest in the cliffs. Even with solar burns, the painful legs and the long section of path, I felt more connected to this walk, and myself, what I have all week.
Long distance hiking is such a wild balance between effort and ease, and today he reminded me how capable I have become. Not only in my body, but to trust that I can handle what comes to me, the mile per mile.
Tomorrow we continue south. But for now: a little relaxation and legs on the wall before bed!

Two stork were in charge of their huge nests of the cliff, with the Atlantic Ocean that extend behind them, one of the most striking views of the day.
