Argentina beats Uruguay in penalties, finishes third in Copa America Femenina 2025

Argentina’s dream to reach a fifth Copa America Femenina final is perhaps crushed by Colombia, but it received some postponement on Friday and won third place against Uruguay in Quito.

Argentina had lost the semi-final at penalties, but this time it ended on the other side of the result and won the match 5-4 against Uruguay. The result meant that the Argentines finished third in successive editions of the tournament.

«I think they have surpassed my dream. This team leaves the Copa América unbeaten, and that is a source of pride,» said Germán Portanova, head coach of Argentina, after the game.

«Uruguay is a team that competes very well. It was a narrow match; we knew it would be really difficult.»

Aldana Cometti opened the score for Argentina in the 24th minute before Esperanza restored parity 11 minutes later. Juliana Viera supplied one for Uruguay at the point of the break and pushed the Argentines to the rear foot.

Just when it seemed like Uruguay would win the game it would have been the best finish since 2006-it would have been a penalty with about 10 minutes left for the full-time whistle.

Argentina converted all his penalties, while Stephanie Lacoste’s Miss for the Uruguayans in the fourth Tour of Kicks handed a well -fought victory to the Albiceleste.

«We know that Uruguay is difficult. I congratulate them with their grit; they are a team that if they continue to work, we can go far. We wanted everything, ultimately, football,» said Cometti.

«We didn’t want to go to punishments, but we managed to win today. I wish it had happened in the last game. We are happy,» she said.
