Jose Mourinho becomes emotional while talking about former player and captain, Jorge Costa

Jose Mourinho became emotional during a press conference while talking about Jorge Costa, who died on Tuesday after a cardiac arrest.

Costa led Mourinho’s Porto to Champions League Success in 2004 and played 530 games in all competitions and won 50 caps for Portugal en route.

Speaking of Costa for Fenerbahce’s Champions League qualifying match against Feyenoord, Mourinho paid tribute to his former player.

«It is part of my history. You have captains and you have leaders. It is not always about the bracelet, but what you represent. And Jorge was one of these guys who cleaned the waste and let the coach do his work as a coach. That is perfection for a coach when his captain does this work,» said the Portuguese manager.

«I am here now, because if he could talk to me now, he would tell me – come on, do your press conference. And he would say tomorrow, play the game, win the game and forget me. That would be Jorge. So that is what I am going to try – and my work to do today.

After a successful gaming career at Porto, Costa served as director of professional football in his second Stint at the club.

«Throughout his life, both on and outside the field, Jorge Costa embodied the values that FC Porto defines: dedication, leadership, passion and an unwavering spirit of conquest. He left his mark on generations of fans,» the club said in his statement after Costa’s death.
