In the first 4 days of the path we have walked from Les Houches to Refugio LE Randonneur, on the outskirts of Coumayeur. In the course of those 65 km, I don’t think I can identify Mont Blanc with confidence until today.
A peak that I definitely thought was Mont Blanc …
The things we have seen so far
Now maybe it’s only me, but I thought it would be obvious, that Mont Blanc would stand out, evidently above the rest. But in no way I am disappointed. The path has provided imposing foothills and peaks, giants in their own right that almost act as a defense wall around Mont Blanc. The immensity and scale of the surrounding range is much of what makes the TMB such spectacular path, not simply the homonym peak itself.
With large increases and tons of elevation won, but somehow the most steep descents, we have crossed the border of France to Italy. We have experienced alpine meadows, cows and family -style food fields at night. We have stopped to see the sunlight hit the dozens of enamels and turn them into a beautiful mixture of bluish green, gray and white.

Walking through a herd of cattle on our way to Rifugio Randonneur.
Now I am sitting out of our rifugio at night. While I’m not sure that I used to shower every night or wear clean clothes, I love how the community of trails joins every night. Having changed camps and tent pads, for banks and tables, hikers sit together to reflect on their days. So, naturally, I have confessed several times that I didn’t know where Mont Blanc was.
With shorter hiking days ahead, I am excited to see Mont Blanc and continue experiencing the Italian Alps.
They catch all the paths,
