Know me halfway – the walk

Day 107-8 miles today from Impo Shelter to Barn Hostel, 1200 feet up, 3600 feet down, in Mile Marker 1900

The Sleeping Beauty of the Forest

After I arrived at the shelter, I ate and then put on around 4:00 pm and went to sleep. I was exhausted. I think I’m still recovering from the presidential ones.

I could periodically listen to the noises of the multitude of children who came to the camp. They were very noisy, but I could barely listen to them with the caps for the ears and my wool socks on my eyes.

So I slept until the sun began to rise around 4:00 in the morning.

He had slept more than 12 hours. Today I felt a little beaten by a couple of blows that I had especially a hard blow that I took on my knee down North Carter Mountain yesterday.

Approaching Ultralight

I started around 7:00 am. My package is extremely light (20 pounds). I only have my sleeping shirt to sleep and underwear, swollen, sleeping bag, tent and approximately one day of food.

You don’t feel like anything on my back at this time. That has definitely been a benefit to me since he left Crawfords’s notch and addressed the presidential ones. It was then that I met Knockerz and I could throw all my additional things that I would not need for one or two nights in the forest.

People who walk with support really do so. It is very good to know that I have the resources that Knockerz can provide me within a day or two walks. It will definitely make this last hiking section much more pleasant.

Short walk

This morning he feels relatively cold with temperatures in the 50s and a cold breeze. There is a little rain, but it is not so bad right now. For today’s walk, it seems that I could have a technical fall in Mount Moriah.

The path is like a great rock slab. For many areas I walked sideways due to the way the rock leaned down. The forest is the fir pine forest with a thick layer of moss that covers the forest floor.

Morías cliffs

Around a mile and a half before the Moriah mountain, the road opened to a small cliff. The tiptoe path next to the edge of the cliff falls.

I could see in a beautiful small valley under and the layers of mountains beyond. I did not see signs of any human intervention, not even a radio tower or a road.

Mountain died

There was a slight drizzle, wetting the faces of the rock. The climb to Mount Moriah was mainly rock slabs that have no support or regular points.

To go up or down these rock slabs, I leaned my body towards the mountain. Then I used the front of my foot to grab the rock slab and I just hope it does not slide me.

I’m worried to put additional tension on my feet and calves. This type of climbing definitely tense both.

The presidentials really annihilated those areas of my body and I am doing everything possible to use my quads and my upper part of the body to give their knees the opportunity to recover. But for this section of the path there was no other option. There were no support points or matters.

Where is the path?

As I still climb these faces of rock, the path becomes less and less evident sometimes. Then I saw something very rare, a white fire in a milestone.

Just seeing a white fire is a rare occurrence here. I don’t know why, but the path is not very well marked in whites. There are also many side paths. And the path of the Apalaches has other path names with the At Put as secondary between parentheses only one «(at)».

Perspective

It is interesting how perspectives in our minds direct how we see the outside world. I know that is the work of the brain to constantly interpret the outside world and project forward to avoid threats.

That is why we are afraid many times fears that have no base.

It is definitely the case with me in this next stage of life. Everyone is so excited to reach retirement, but for almost half a century I have lived a work life. Even when I was a child. He always gave me a great sense of achievement, a sense of direction. Now that I have been in retirement, I no longer have to worry about the work world. He is a bit disturbing, especially for someone like me who really enjoyed his career. This transition is one of the main reasons why I am here in AT.

The gentleman with whom I shared the shelter with last night is an hiker in Australia. He said he really enjoyed Rocksylvania. He also really enjoyed crossing the presidential ones with all those rocks. For him, he looked a lot to hiking he has made at home in Australia.

Perspectives For me, the boulder of the presidential ones was a nightmare.

Monte Moriah

The climb of Mount Moriah was not very difficult. It was very steep, but there were many support points and matters. After Mount Moriah, the path seemed to level a little despite the fact that he still had about 2500 feet of elevation to go out.

Knockerz is going back!

Knockerz is doing its first one that comes from Route 2. should know her more than half. She is worried about getting lost.

The path continued down with a good descent. Above all, it was like Boulder’s steps. After a while, I thought I would like to listen to some music, but the rain began to hit the forest above. Then I thought it was enough music at this time. It is a rain so light that the forest canopy is barely going through at this point.

Finally I ran into the students’ blows about 4 miles from the output of the road. She had in a complete backpack. I had to laugh because my backpack has now become an ultralight package with almost nothing. His was a huge package. Apparently, he had packed everything for this 4 mile walk in case it was lost in the forest and had to spend the night.

Did I ate what?

Knockerz and I went out to 4 more miles. It was very nice for us to be together on the road again after so long being separated. We talked all the time and time passed.

Then it took me to the dynasty buffet, where I ate 5 plates of several Chinese foods. And then I obtained a dish of desserts with cakes and donuts and six different types of ice cream in cups. And then he returned to another cup of three different types of ice cream twice and more cake. My hunger was not satiated, but I had no more space inside my stomach. I have never eaten like this before and probably I will never be again. At this moment I feel comatoso for eating so much.

Tomorrow Kneaterz and I will pass the Osgood camp again and we will climb to the Alpine area. I want you to see that area of the path. She worked very hard on our previous walks walking 750 miles through multiple setbacks. I am taking a day free to march north so that I can see this area before going to Maine.
