Keny’s President William Ruto offers national team football players in cash bonuses for victories in the African Nations Championships (Chan), after their unexpected success in the tournament so far.
It is the first time that three East African countries-Kenia, Tanzania and Uganda have organized competition, after long delays about stadiums that are ready.
Although Kenya has given money to athletes for winning medals in the Olympic Games and world championships, it is the first time that football players receive comparable recognition for their performances.
Chan-debutants Kenya are currently leading group A with seven points after their shock 1-0 win over North African giants Morocco in the Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.
Earlier in the tournament, Ruto promised each player a million shilling ($ 7,753) for a competition profit.
But he increased the bet on Monday, instead he promised to reward each player with 2.5 million shilling ($ 19,350) when they beat Zambia in their last group match this Sunday, according to a government declaration.
«It’s the Harambee stars that brought the country together,» he told the players on Monday.
«I am very proud that the nation is inspired by your talents,» he added.
The players also get a million shilling and a house with two bedrooms when they win in the quarterfinals.
