Only a few hours after he was omitted from the team of Paris Saint-Germain for the UEFA Super Cup final on Wednesday against Tottenham, star goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma posted a message that he left the club.
When PSG mentioned his team before the game earlier on Tuesday, goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, who recently came to Lille for just over 40 million euros ($ 46 million), was recorded together with Back -Up goalkeepers Matvei Safonov and Renato Marin.
The arrival of Chevalier was expected to signal the departure of Donnarumma, whereby the 26-year-old Italy International would probably not accept number 2 as coach Luis Enrique that decided. Donnarumma then posted a message in Italian, English and French on his Instagram account and said he was effectively forced.
«Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the success of the team,» he wrote. «I am disappointed and discouraged.»
He said goodbye to fans for the new season.
«I hope to get the chance to look the fans in the eyes again at the Parc des Princes and to take as it should be done,» said Donnarumma. «I will always take the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights and of you, who felt me at home.»
Donnarumma did not mention the person who no longer wants him in the team, but in a press conference before the game, PSG coach Luis Enrique explained why he had signed Chevalier.
«These are always difficult decisions to make, I know. I can only say good things about Gigio (Gianluigi). He is without a doubt one of the best players in his position, and he is even better as a person,» said Luis Enrique. «We were looking for a different type of goalkeeper. And I repeat, it is always difficult to make such a decision.»
It is thought that Chevalier’s superior death of the back – which was a noticeable shortcoming for Donnarumma – was a crucial factor in the decision.
However, Donnarumma was perhaps the best goalkeeper in Europe last season and played a key role in PSG’s Champions League success with inspired Shot-Stop in the knockout phases. He also played for Italy when it won the European championship in 2021.
But with another year about his contract, Donnarumma had refused to sign a new contract and it was unlikely that PSG would let him leave for free at the end of the season. He has been strongly associated with a move to Premier League Big-Spender Manchester City, with Manchester United also reportedly interested.
PSG experienced the same situation with Kylian Mbappé two seasons ago, who eventually came to Real Madrid on a free transfer after he refused to take the option of a one -year contract extension.
Donnarumma was in a similar position as a Chevalier when he came to the club after helping Italy to win the euros. He replaced Keylor Navas as number 1, although Navas had been excellent for PSG the previous season.
The arrival of Donnarumma at PSG was seen by fans as enormously unfair on Navas and an awkward movement of the club. Now the situation is the circle for the Italy keeper, which is in almost the same position as Navas was.
«If he has to go, we thank him from the ground of our hearts,» said PSG Captain Marquinhos. «He has been a great leader all those years. Seeing Donnarumma would upset me.»
PSG starts his competition campaign at Nantes on August 17.
