Gianluigi Donnarumma was omitted from the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) team for his Ligue 1 match in Nantes on Sunday, days after he was dropped for the UEFA Super Cup final.
Italy no. 1 was one of the best players of PSG last season, which helped to win the Champions League for the first time with a series of decisive versions in the knockout phases.
But PSG coach Luis Enrique signed goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from Lille during the low season, reportedly because of his superior passing capacity from the back.
«These are always difficult decisions to make, I know. I can only say good things about Gigio (Gianluigi). He is without a doubt one of the best players in his position, and he is even better as a person,» said Enrique. «We were looking for a different type of goalkeeper. And I repeat, it is always difficult to make such a decision.»
Donnarumma has already said that he wants to leave PSG in the midst of speculation, he will soon become a member of the Premier League giant Manchester City.
«Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the success of the team,» he wrote on social media. «I am disappointed and discouraged.»
«I hope to get the chance to look the fans in the eyes again at the Parc des Princes and to take as it should be done,» said Donnarumma. «I will always take the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights and of you, who felt me at home.»
