Peter Shilton congratulates the Brazilian goalkeeper Fabio on breaking record


Legend Peter Shilton from England, Peter Shilton, shot Fluminense Shot Stopper Fabio his record for most supplementary performances in men’s football as a «brilliant performance».

Fabio, 44, broke Shilton’s Mark on Tuesday when he played for a 1,391st time in the 2-0 win over Colombia’s America de Cali in the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.

«Huge congratulations to Fabio Deivson Lopes Maciel for beating my @GWR A -record that I was proud of for the most competitive matches in the history of football for more than 28 years,» Shilton said in a post on X, formerly before Twitter.

«Keeping records within the brilliant performance of the keepers Union Fabio #proud @fifacom @fa.»

Fluminen and Brazilian media say that Fabio is now only in football history, although neither FIFA nor regional body conebol has explained a record.

«Sometimes we do not realize the importance of such an important achievement as the breaking of this record, which has been standing for many years,» said Fabio, who spent his entire career in Brazil, following his clean sheet in the Copa Sudamericana last 16 second stage.

The home fans sang: «Fabio is the best keeper in Brazil», and he received a memorial plate to mark the performance.

«Nobody plays so many matches without a level of professionalism as his,» said Fluminense coach Renato Gaucho.

«He will undoubtedly continue to play for a long time. It will be difficult for another player to surpass his record.»

Fabio won the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense in 2023 and was part of the side who reached the semi -final of the Club World Cup in the United States this summer.

He made 976 performances for Cruzeiro between 2005 and 2022, after playing 30 times for Uniao Bandeirante and another 150 games for Vasco da Gama.

His record outing against America de Cali was his 235th game for Fluminense.

Fabio started his career in 1997, the year that Shilton retired, but unlike the former record holder, it was never covered at senior level.

The 75-year-old 125-meal Englishman, who was an important member of the Nottingham Forest Side who won successive European cups (1979/80), regards his total number of performances as 1,387, but Guinness World Records places the number of 1,390.
