The League: Mir Score Equalizer as Elche holds Athletic Madrid on 1-1 draw

Atletico Madrid did not succeed in holding his lead for the second LA Liga match in a row and settled for a 1-1 home stretching with newly promoted side Elche on Saturday when Rafa Mir’s Equalizer has canceled the early strike of Alexander Sorloth.

Elche ‘keeper Matias Dituro made several crucial rescues in the second half to keep the visiting side in the game, because Atletico, who lost in Espanyol last weekend, remained Windless in the competition.

«We have had two games. … Let’s continue. We are on the right track. I love what I see and it’s the way forward,» Mir said Dazn After Elche had secured his second consecutive draw in the campaign, after he had also made real betis on Monday.

Sorloth placed Atletico eight minutes ahead, the Norway sprinted to the box to meet the long ball of David Hancko and shoot it over Elche Keeper Matias Ditturo with a left -wing first touch.

Dituro prevented Sorloth to double the lead of Atletico six minutes later and dropped low to block the attempt of the forward distance with his vast right leg, keeping the visitors in the competition.

Elche was equated in the following minute, with the excellent cross of Alvaro Rodriguez of the right finding Mir, who defeated Atletico keeper Jan Oblak with a perfectly timed shot with the right foot when the end came to life in the Metropolitano Stadium.

Giuliano Simeone led the host side attempt to regain the leadership, but was unable to find in the target of the Pass of Thiago Almada shortly before the half hour and hit the post of Sorloth’s cross in the 41st minute, but only after falling in Elche’s offside trap.

Dituro saved quickly to deny Hancko’s headaging up to the hour before cleaning up the cross of Conor Gallagher with a dive, as Atletico tried in vain to break the defense of Elche.

«It’s up to you. We will have to be patiently in front of the box. Let’s continue the attack,» coach Diego Simeone told Atletico players during a break in the 77th minute.

But the breakthrough avoided the host side when Dituro stopped the shot of Antoine Griezmann in the 89th minute and Julian Alvarez shot wide in extra time, ended a disappointing night where Atletico had more than twice as many shots as Elche but the winner could not find.

«A lot of anger, a lot of anger, because in the end we did everything … We tried everything. We missed the last touch, the last pass to score,» said Oblak.

«One point is not enough after two games. I am angry, I feel bad. … There is still the rest of the season, but we need points. That is the only truth.»

Atletico will visit Alaves next Saturday, a day after Elche Levante organizes.
