PCT SOBO day 49 – Where are all the nobles?

Day 49

Start: stealthy, mile 857.2

END: Despair site, Mile 881.6

Walked miles: 24.4 miles + 2 miles of fish lake bonus

When I went to sleep last night, the wind around me. Fortunately, he calmed down after a few hours and slept comfortably in my warm quota. The morning was a bit cold when I glimpsed the dawn of the protection of my store, so I took my time and delayed the emergence of my warm cocoon.

When I returned to the road, I was surprised that no nobles had happened to me that morning. Maybe I was approaching at the end of Novo’s bubble and most of the «early» nobles had already passed. Who knew?

While walking, the clouds entered. The prognosis required rain from tomorrow, so I still had another day to prepare me mentally. I spent most of the morning forest walking and looking at trees while listening to my podcasts. I spent some nobles, but not many. The path was strangely quiet.

For lunch, I stopped in the spring of Christi. It is cold, crispy and delicious water really gave on the spot. A few wasps curiously buzzed around me, so I got up and kept my distance, not wanting them to chop me again after recovering from my last.

While I ate, I looked at my map and realized that I could get to Fish Lake Resort on time for a hot meal. Fish Lake Resort is a collection of cabins and tents sites, as well as a general store with a small restaurant. All I really wanted was a hot meal, so it became my mission for the day.

Up and down the forest, wounded, a hamburger in my mind. The day was a bit warm, but the trees shaded me from the worst. When I got to the road, I stopped in one of the railings to get the attention of the drivers. And after a few minutes it worked! A woman stopped in her ’83 truck and said she needed to collect her Fish Lake kayak anyway, so she would take me. Sweet!

PCT SOBO day 49 – Where are all the nobles?

It was a short trip to the complex, only 2 miles, I enjoyed chatting with my hitch. We said goodbye and headed directly to the interior to get my hamburger, as well as some snacks from the general store. In 5 flat minutes, my hamburger and my sprite were not seen anywhere. Yum!

When I went to the porch where chairs, tables and points of sale were installed for hikers, I saw a couple of family faces. Two sobo I had not seen since Washington was there. Wow! I guess I was really in the sobo bubble. We chat and reach the events. They told me that many nobles had moved away from the path to attend PCT Trail Days in Cascade Locks and that is why the path seemed so empty. That made sense!

I had a little Internet business to take care of, so when that was done, I talked a little more with the other hikers and then made my plans to return to the road. I had about 30 minutes until sunset, so I really didn’t want to hook myself. Instead, I walked the 2 -mile path back to the PCT. Fortunately, it was relatively flat and quiet, making time move quickly.

When the sky around me darkened, I started looking for a place in the camp. No matter how experienced I was, there was still a part of my lizard brain that made it clear that I needed to be in my shelter when I was dark outside. Just before the sky was completely darkened, I found a bit of earth large enough for my store.

The night was warm, so I stretched a little before crawling in my store and fell asleep.

And that is a day in the life of a PCT Sobo hiker!
