Argentina Vooruit and Captain Lionel Messi has confirmed that he will miss the next FIFA World Cup qualification match against Ecuador on 10 September.
After the victory against Venezuela, Messi said: «I spoke with Leo (Scaloni) and we decided, or rather, he decided that I had to rest. I come back from an injury and although I am now in order, we prefer to travel and play another game so that I can rest for what comes.»
The Inter Miami star will not travel with the team to Estadio Monumental Isidro Romero Carbo in Guayaquil, who will be host for the game.
Messi scored twice on Thursday in the 3-0 win of Argentina on Venezuela for a raw sale crowd that had gathered in Estadio Monumental to say goodbye.
«Being able to finish here in this way is what I have always dreamed of,» said Messi. «I have experienced many things on this field, both good and not as good, but it is always a pleasure to play in Argentina for our fans.»
Messi still has to give some instructions when he withdraws from the highest level of sport. But the qualifications for the World Cup 2030 start in 2027, when it is 40.
The captain of Argentina scored in the 39th and 80th minutes and Lautaro Martinez added a goal in the 76th.
Messi now has 36 goals in the South American World Cup qualifications and remains as the all-time leader. His Inter Miami teammate Luis Suarez has 29 goals in continental qualification, but he has withdrawn from the Uruguay national team. Marcelo Moreno Martins from Bolivia is third with 22.
