Valencia serves a lawsuit against Netflix via Vinicius JR -Documentary


The Spanish club Valencia said that it has filed a lawsuit against Netflix who claims forgery in a documentary about the Brazilian player Vinícius Júnior.

Valencia said that the documentary wrongly accused a large group of Valencia fans of making racist songs against the Real Madrid Forward in a La Liga match in 2023.

The club has filed the court case after its public requirements for corrections by the production company of the documentary have not been fulfilled.

The lawsuit is against Netflix and the production company for damaging ‘Valencia’s Honor’. It strives for financial compensation, corrections of the subtitles in the documentary and the publication of the conviction, the club said.

Valencia threatened the court case for the first time this year. At the time, Vinícius’s representatives said that the player would not be involved because the question against Netflix and the producers of the documentary was.

The documentary contains a video on social media that shows what a large audience seemed to be in the Mestalla Stadium in Vinícius. The video has the word ‘mono’, Spanish for AAP, in the subtitles. But Valencia claims that the fans actually sing ‘Tonto’, that Spanish is crazy.

The then coach of Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti, accused the Valencia fans of racial-insulting Vinícius, but later apologized after he said he realized that it was not the whole stadium that the word monkey sang.

There were fans who abuse Vinícius racist during that match. Three of them were the first fans to be convicted of racism-related issues in professional football in Spain. They were sentenced to eight months in prison.

During their process, experts showed that the video was edited with the subtitles «Monkey» and did not match reality, according to the Spanish media.

Vinícius, who was repeatedly subjected to racist insults in Spain, was in tears during that 2023 match against Valencia. He confronted a Valencia fan who called him a monkey and made monkeys gestures of the stands behind one of the goals.
