If you write «shock diet» in a search engine, you will get a clear image of how the human body responds to a sudden fall in calorie intake. The risks associated with this type of diet are well documented. In contrast, it is much more difficult to find reliable information about weight loss caused by a sudden increase in exercise. This is where one day they could somedy shed some light: they are motivated, curious, abundant, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. In summary, they are ideal candidates for scientific study. Some of them drop more than 50 pounds during their walk, while others lose very little. I am somewhere among the extremes, which means that my observations could be applied to the average hiker.
Why regret?
A long time ago in a state very, very far, I started taking note of my weight before and after running. New in Arizona, I was not sure that my body worked properly at summer temperatures. At first, I tried to re -end up until I reached my original weight, but soon I realized that this was excessive. Thirst is a reliable and finely adjusted mechanism and does not need my help. I continued to register my weight anyway, and finally discovered that information is useful for cross training. (By replacing sweat lost by burned calories, it is possible to compare cycling and race. At a certain temperature and a similar level of effort, I need to go 2.6 times further on my mountain bike to burn the same amount of calories).
Results
The table below shows the average (average) body weight values prior to the realization of almost ten years. Each race usually had one hour duration, and each average was typically calculated from three measures per week.
More than 400 weeks of weight measurements.
- Grey Timeline sections. When I visit the family at Christmas, I put my exercise routine and as too much. Subsequently, a return to business as usual leads to gradual weight loss for a period of three months.
- Green Timeline sections. These are hiking vacations, each duration of several weeks.
- 2019. John Muir Trail, then a road trip that visits several paths.
- 2020. Road trip to several walks, including the Uinta Highline Trail.
- 2021. PCT through the attempt, with an interruption of forest fires in the middle.
- 2022. Arizona Trail, and two months later, the sections of the PCT that had lost me.
- 2023. Continental Divide Trail.
- 2024. Tour for the fourteen of Colorado.
- 2025. Pacific Northwest Trail.
Hiking traveling trips show weight loss as linear, which is not really the case. It is only that the weight prior and after the vacation is connected by a straight line that covers the missing values.
Conclusions
I tend to indulge too much for a couple of weeks after a hiking trip, partly because I feel that I have won it, but especially because I am more hungry than normal. The CDT was no exception, but soon I returned to my usual calorie consumption, after having immediately resumed my exercise routine.
In August 2019, I noticed the weight loss related to hiking for the first time. I fell 9 pounds for 18 days in the JMT. Although my Azt, PCT and CDT walks were much longer, they also made me lose an average of 9 pounds. During a walk, it seems that I quickly use my available fat, then enter some type of low power mode. One of the possible consequences of a shock diet is «Rebound effect»And it is something to consider before starting a walk. Apparently, I spent enough time in low power mode in the CDT that my baseline weight increased by at least ten pounds.
