It has been difficult for me to write a farewell post. I finished the AT in the states of Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Most of the trail is also hiked in Connecticut and smaller portions of West Virginia and New York. I recognize that this is a great achievement.
It still hurts a little to see others complete their hikes, but I also have to acknowledge the reality that my life is full of amazing blessings and is so much better than it was a year ago.
My 3 grandchildren (2 born in April and July) are happy and healthy and I have spent a lot of time holding them and playing with them since I left the road.
I am in the process of buying my own house.
My free time has given me time to start writing a fantasy book with Bamboo, my partner extraordinaire. It has also given me time to start dreaming and working on home business ideas and helping my daughter start her art business.
My knee and other nagging injuries have been healing and I’m planning more hikes for next year.
My self-confidence has skyrocketed thanks to my experiences along the way.
I know I can fall and get back up. I know I can overcome what seem like insurmountable obstacles. I know how to show myself more compassion. The list of things I have learned during my time at AT is long and the impact will be lifelong.
I hope to continue walking new trails, seeing new places and learning new things. Hiking even a section of the Appalachian Trail has been a gift that I will treasure for the rest of my life. Thank you all for the support and encouragement along the way, and I hope we meet again somewhere along the way. Goodbye for now and happy hiking!
