Premier League 2025-26: Brentford record victory over hapless West Ham

Igor Thiago and Mathias Jensen scored as Brentford secured a 2-0 Premier League victory over West Ham United on Monday, handing the hosts a club record fourth consecutive home league defeat at the start of the season.

Brentford moved to thirteenth place with ten points from eight games, while West Ham, booed by the fans, is nineteenth with four points.

New West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo will have seen the scale of the job as his side finished in second place with only the woodwork and wasteful Brentford finishing preventing defeat.

Thiago scored from 10 yards in the 43rd minute after Kevin Schade’s pass and Jensen fired into the roof of the net in extra time to seal a victory that Espirito Santo felt was far too comfortable for Brentford.

“It’s really nice to get the three points and get away from the relegation zone,” said Brentford midfielder Mikkel Damsgaard.

«We missed a lot of chances, on set pieces we could have scored more (goals), but we are happy with the three points. We are finding a rhythm as a team and connecting with each other a little more.»

EMPTY WEST HAM SEATS

There were empty seats at kick-off as what appeared to be several thousand West Ham fans staged a stay-away in protest against chairman David Sullivan and vice-chairman Karren Brady.

Brentford come into the match having lost all three of their away games in the league this season, but had 22 attempts on goal, the most they have managed away from home in the Premier League.

West Ham were overrun in midfield and were unable to gain a foothold in the match, being outplayed by a team that had struggled at the start of the campaign.

The goal that was coming for Brentford came just before half-time, when a long ball was met by Kevin Schade on the edge of the penalty area and he kept three defenders at bay before feeding Thiago.

The striker’s shot was half-blocked by West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, but the ball dribbled into the corner of the net.

It was more of the same in the second half as Brentford dominated possession and Schade hit the crossbar with a header on the hour mark.

West Ham never looked like an equalizer, and Brentford made it 2-0 with virtually the last kick of the match when Jensen was picked out in space in the penalty area and drilled the ball into the net from 15 yards.
