East Bengal started their campaign with a 2-2 draw against local side Dempo SC at the same venue on Saturday. Mohammed Ali gave Dempo a lead in the first half before goals from Naorem Mahesh Singh and Miguel Figueira early in the second half put the Red and Golds in a dominant position. However, a late equalizer from Laximanrao Rane in the 89th minute left East Bengal with just one point.
The Kolkata club, fresh from a strong pre-season that included a Durand Cup semi-final appearance and a runners-up finish in the IFA Shield, will look to assert their dominance against a familiar Indian Super League opponent in Chennaiyin FC.
Chennaiyin FC, led by new head coach Clifford Miranda, suffered a setback in the opening match at the Fatorda Stadium, losing 0-2 to Mohun Bagan Super Giant on Saturday evening. With an all-Indian side, Chennaiyin showed resilience despite defeat. Miranda, who previously led Odisha FC to the Super Cup title in 2023, is tasked with building a youthful squad that has not featured since the end of the 2024-25 edition of the Indian Super League.
Historically, meetings between the two sides have been closely contested. In ten encounters so far, East Bengal have won twice, Chennaiyin thrice, while five matches ended in draws.
