We had a very peaceful night camping next to the stream. Just below our site there was another washing bridge.
We had a fairly short walk to the city, and half of this, I received a call from our favorite path angel, Fresh Ground! I wanted to know where we were to be able to feed our little crew again. I’ve been dreaming about his food.
As soon as we arrived in the city, we made a line line for the Damascus Madner. When we were here for the days of paths in March, we had a delicious food in the restaurant, so it is obvious that it was our first stop. Sam, one of Tennessee’s brothers, joined us. His brother Will was a few hours behind us, but he was on his way.
Our next stop was Damascus’s outfitter. I sent my shoes here months ago, while Nick had reserved another pair of Altra Olympus here in the outfitter.
I bought some lyophilized dinners and snacks that I could not find in the groceries. Nick bought a new pair of shorts since the lining in his smart wool shorts of less than two months has completely torn. With luck, you can get them guaranteed!
Finally, we headed to our shelter. Lady Di is directed by an ex through a hiker. She and her partner, a yellow laboratory called Duke, run a tight ship. It is one of the cleanest shelters in which we have stayed and is very well thought out for hikers.
We settled with laundry and showers and take care of some tasks before taking your bicycles to Food City for our complete replenishment. We stopped in the neighbor Damascus Brewing for a drink after the purchase.
We return to the restaurant for dinner, followed by another brewery in the city to watch live music. Both Sam and Will joined us here, and we left the rest of the night (until 9 pm).
The next morning, we had a delicious variety of breakfast to fill ourselves to get out of the city.
The walk was almost directly on a hill to the Tennessee border. That marks the end of more than 500 miles in Virginia! It feels good to mark another state outside the list.
We reach about 15 miles up to a camp just above a winding road that people with strong cars love to drive quickly. Ear plugs are a blessing.
We established an alarm for 5:30 am today was going to be a day of almost 28 miles. The camping and water situation for this section was going to be too short or a little more than we would like, so we decided to give ourselves more time to reach an acceptable place.
We start through beautiful pastures from the beginning. There were a lot of young cows in a field that had an ordered barn with an AT symbol to the side.
We approached Lake Watauga and had some beautiful views to the biting area.
We arrived from the recreation of the lake, and Nick went up. He had been hot all day, and a fresh sauce did well. I reserved a room in Boots off hostel just in front of the lake. I would have jumped into the cloudy water if I didn’t tell me the shower waiting for me.
We made a small refueling in the shelter and enjoyed some cold drinks at the community table. A family -looking girl entered a subway sandwich. It was little! We are back in the White Mountains of New Hampshire along Garfield Ridge. She is a Flip-Flopper and has just started her walk again two days before in Damascus after a top of 47 days of rest. We were sure that we would never see her again due to time, but the path has a fun way to connect it again with people.
I did not sleep very well due to the noise of the road and a street light near our store; Ear plugs can only do a lot. Our breakfast supplied was very light and, looking back, I should have bought a breakfast sandwich or have eaten much more.
I would end up dragging my feet all day. It was hot and stagnant, and I simply did not think I had enough to eat or drink. Heat makes fun things to his appetite and thirst if you are not diligent. We had the goal of reaching 24 miles, but we only reached 20. However, we did it, camping along a small and pleasant stream, which was a comfort. He simply did not have much interest in walking more than 5 pm. I needed dinner!
Smalls ended in the same area as us, so the three left at night. I think our Tennessee Brother companions were the complete 24.
Tomorrow would be a brighter day. We will return in some mountain calds with excellent views! We have plans to go through a shelter for a very small refueling so we can get to Erwin, TN, in a few days.
