Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba played the final games of their professional careers in Inter Miami’s 3-1 win over Vancouver Whitecaps at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.
Alba and Busquets both started as Lionel Messi’s assists proved enough to earn Inter Miami their first MLS Cup despite being under pressure from Vancouver Whitecaps for large periods of the match.
Alba was involved in the third goal, sending the ball to Messi, who brought it down and released Tadeo Allende to score.
Both players had previously announced that they would end their playing careers at the end of the current season.
Midfielder Busquets played more than 700 times for Barcelona, winning nine La Liga titles and three Champions League titles before joining MLS in 2023, where he won the Leagues Cup and Supporters’ Shield. He played 143 times for Spain, winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2012 UEFA European Championships.
Left back Alba had a similar club career, winning the Spanish league title six times with Barcelona and the UEFA Champions League once. He also won the European Championship with Spain, as well as the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League.
