24-27 days, miles 357.7-423.8: White pass-> Trout Lake

August 24 – 1 – 11.6 miles

Mile 357.7 -> 369.3

I woke up with a wind and a lot of condensation in my store at 6:30 am I knew that we would not leave until noon, but we decided to pack my things to be able to do other things, but be ready to leave when. So I did that, I spent time talking to the family, and then I realized how hungry I was and entered the store! I found an excellent breakfast sandwich full of egg, sausage and cheese, and then relaxed for a while and talked with other hikers. I also had to start looking at Oregon’s resupplies, since I had only planned for Washington before starting, so I worked on that and talked to my parents about the resupply boxes I would need. At this point, my backpack was not very good either. I have had this same since I needed a backpack package when I was a teenager and has passed a lot and has been destroying the seams since the first day. I knew that I would probably need a new one at some point, I was simply not sure when and I didn’t want to get something new before starting without being sure that I would even get on the way and continue. So I decided to ask for a new one now and I had one in mind that I had been wanting, the Gossamer butterfly team, and I did so as I walked and still had service during the first miles of the day. I sent it to the Cascade Locks post office where I planned to be from now on a week, with the hope that it will arrive on time! Emma and I left just after 12 pm for a sunny and warm rise of 2000 feet out of the pass, with some insects, but they went once we got on a crest where it winded. In the upper part of this ascent, we both stopped and astonished. We had been walking on the side of a rocky mountain and then we got to the pass and it was very beautiful. Mountains for miles and miles in all directions and Mount Rainier once again look out in the distance. At this point it was really what I would consider vertiginous! I was very happy to walk again and I felt that it was how I always wanted to feel here. The descent was mainly in the shadow and fresh, which was also pleasant and was happy because the weather showed some days without rain. Then we entered the Wilderness of Goat Rocks, which we had heard that it was the favorite section of most hikers in Washington and all those we had been going through told us how beautiful it was, so it was super excited. However, we only got a little in the desert for the day, before arriving at the camp at 5:30 pm in a protected place in the Tree Pass trees. I arrived before Emma (for the first time!), We are approximately the same rhythm, but I tend to reduce the speed a little in the afternoon, so it will generally reach the camp 5-30 minutes before me depending on the day. But I won it today! He felt quite well. He also pointed out that it was August! It is wild that has already been here on the road for so long and that is a new month. I had a Knorr side of pesto paste for dinner that was delicious, and then I coined a little in my store after 7 pm before falling asleep.

Not at all astonishment.

August 25 – 2 – 23.3 miles

Mile 369.3 -> 391.9

We started walking at 6:30 am in a cold morning and fog, like many so far. However, it was not so cold last night! We immediately ascended and we knew we headed to the rocks of goat! However, a few miles of the day I began to notice some smoke, smelling it a little, and then we noticed it on the horizon while we were even more. I think this morning was my favorite section so far! The path serpent through Idilic Meadows and Streams and then opened even more widely in vast views of Mount Rainier and Mount Adams and irregular needles that seem medieval strengths. The path was rough and a bit incomplete in this section with quite steep exits and very sliding -looking rocks. Then we entered what is apparently called ‘The Knife’s Edge «, which was a fairly thin and irregular section. Then I took my second alternative from the PCT while we used a stock path instead of the real PCT to omit a half mile (by adding half a mile) because there were some abundant snow travers that did not feel comfortable. However, I mentioned the horizon Possible, but still many of the peaks were just above the hard line of smoke so that we are going.

August 26 – 3 – 21.7 miles

Mile 391.9 -> 413.6

I got up just after 6 in the morning and felt very stunned and tired. We both moved a little slowly and left just before 7 am is fog and fresh, but not as cold as yesterday morning, and there was a beautiful orange dye in the sky when the sun came out. The last days I have seen tons and tons of clumsy north and continue to arrive! So many! The morning took us out of Goat Rocks desert and then we spent the 400 mile score! There was no sign on the road, so we did ours. We stopped in a place called Lava spring for lunch at 11 am for just over an hour. It was really pleasant, an easily collectible small current and a great shadow to sit. The afternoon was mostly a long ascent. We also find a burn along the way! There was a sign that said ‘active forest fire ahead for the next 1/4 of Milla Sobo’, although we could say that it was no longer active. So we walked and was very marked and all burned on both sides of the path. I had heard and read about this fire of some people and knew that some hikers only a few days before had been escorted by firefighters when the embers burned around them. While that may have been great, I’m glad we are there after that! Surpassed without incident. He also entered Mount Adams Wilderness this afternoon and began to obtain some absolutely impressive views of Mount Adams and the surrounding glaciers! We arrived at Riley Creek just before 4:30 pm and found a camp from the path and near the stream, where some others have already been installed. My store was still a little wet from last night, so I configured it immediately and waited for the best in the soft heat (it dried, yes!). Then I had dinner at 5:30 pm because what else do you do when you get to the camp so early, do you know? He had ramen and mashed potatoes, a double dinner, because he was hungry and was more because he knew we were going to the city tomorrow. I put myself in bed at 7pm and relax for a while just enjoying the sounds around me and already remembered how incredible the day was.

August 27 – 4 – 10.2 miles

Mile 413.6 -> 423.8

We had a little slow morning, leaving at 7 am, because we knew we only had about 10 miles to go to the road where we could take Trout Lake. It was a cold morning and my store was full of condensation. :/ That is what I get to camp for water. There were a few miles of burns zone and then we quickly arrived on the road before 11 am! There was an angel of trails that left a group of hikers, and was about to leave when we appeared, so we were very lucky and let us in and took us to the city. Otherwise, we would probably have had to wait about an hour and a half for the transport service at 12:30 pm The city of Trout Lake was great! Left by the general store we had everything we needed practically within the reach of weapons. The first thing is the first thing we started our clothes (as usual, the first, because it takes longer and, often, there is a line), and then we obtained our results from the general store and had lunch. The general store had a lot and clearly love hikers because they have something we might want to buy, as well as laundry and showers and a large space just next to the store to hang out and organize their things with grass and some tables and a load station. Then I talked to a family and did some necessary things on my phone while I turned to the grass and ate my lunch. The showers were the following on the list, but they were a few minutes walk from the camp, so once our laundry ended, we gathered our things, we went to the camp to configure and then we went to take our showers operated in the room. There was only one shower, so Emma was first and then I did and then we met again in the general store again, everything clean and smelling well (although not for long, I can’t do much without deodorant)! At 5pm we decided to have a pizzeria to a mile from the store from the store and two other hikers ended up joining us! I just received an entire pizza, I ate everything, and it was great. I also got a root beer float that scratched my itching for ice cream! The other two hikers were Toucan and Drama Goose, also walking south, and we heard some crazy stories of them! I returned to the camp around 7:15 pm and then coined a little, I finally accommodated to spend the night at 8:30 pm, ready to return tomorrow!

Alternatives

To be honest, this is just for me to remember. Hyoy!

  • He omitted Mile 375.6-376 and took the blue fire to the old snow to avoid walking on some snow patches, adding approximately .4 miles
  • He omitted Mile 383.2-383.3 for lunch at Sheep Lake at Nannie Ridge Trail after a blue fire, adding .3 miles

66.7 miles

10,922 feet ascent

11,476 feet of descent

This section was the shortest so far, but included some of the most surprising moments so far. In that step, the first day of White Pass really made me cry with happiness and joy of being there, Goat Rocks was so vast and marked, and I was so close to Mount Adams! The mosquitoes were minimal, the weather was good (less smoke, but that disappeared quite fast), and I met tons of great people in the north direction. I am very close to walking all over the state of Washington and being here for a whole month!

Thanks for reading and see you in the next section!
