40 hail stones that fall during the night in Carter 0.00

I tend to sleep with the caps for the ears when I sleep in the cabin floors through the whites. So it was with great surprise that I woke up with the croo telling me that a hail storm had passed early in the morning. After packing my sleep configuration, I venture outside to seek evidence of this weather event.

Indeed, pieces of ice had been grouped in the corners and cracks of the outdoor. What a great night not to have been in my store.

Climbing carter

I left the cabin around 630 in the morning after thanking the Croo for another fantastic WFS. The great caloric gain together with meeting some really great AMC employees in the cabins and campsites has been the highlight of my time in the white mountains.

Today was the last day of navigating whites. The path was garbage once again when I went up to the top of Carter. I am aware that one or two people who read this blog can have very different feelings on my account with respect to whites. For those who have read so far on my trip, most likely they are aware that the lens I use to contemplate the world is somewhat less serious than most. My feelings about whites are not deep.

The fact is that the paths are deliberately created and maintained to limit the numbers that walk in the park. This results in an unpleasant experience for the average hiker and an inaccessibility problem for the majority of the population. How can you see this as something good for anyone will continue to be a mystery for this simple man who has enjoyed walks in hundreds of other mountainous chains in the United States and the world with ecosystems equally (if not more) fragile and a much better quality paths.

But I’m deviating. I arrived at the top of the hill and surprisingly ate two more bars of my food bag. I have taken my food through all whites without really eating anything from it. I had never experienced this in a walk and made me laugh so many times during the past week. Tomorrow I will be in the city, which has the last Walmart that is heading north to Katahdin. It is unlikely that you need to buy any refueling. That is the next crazy level. Thank you again to all the generous hikers day and night in all the whites and the AMC. I have eaten like a king during the past week and has been magnificent.

The views from the beak were good, and the weather had decided to play ball. Carter’s walk implies hitting a series of peaks as it descends. The total descent of the day was about 2000m, and my knees made me know that this was too much in one day. His constant complaint made a slow Waddle Bala down.

Do a lunch stop somewhere between the four and five peaks. Again I was delighted to eat the food I had taken for a week, and I hit some tortillas, cheese and pepperoni. I can tell you that Vermont Sharp’s Cheddar cheese survives very well in your package for a week or more.

Goodbye white mountains

Around 4.30 pm, I ran into the camp to spend the night. I was received by a dozen 10 -year -old girls with their camp counselors running at home at the shelter and its surroundings. This made my decision very easy to place my store well above the party below. And even better, no more tent platforms. I could remember my tent dying in the soft earth where it belongs.

I configured my hammock next to the store and spent the next time more or less balanced in the soft breeze of a perfect afternoon. The great mental relief of knowing that the whites were made and that there would be real paths ahead as in a normal walk was comforting.

I celebrated my third meal of the day outside my backpack, for the first time in eight days, with a classic Thai Ramen of double pad. And I didn’t turn on in PB. Lip of a good side.

I returned to the hammock and read my book for a while. I am excited about tomorrow, since I am going to stay in a camp with a room in Gorham, it will effectively be a zero, since it is just a 5 km walk to the road for a quick hitch to the camp.

At 8 pm, I rolled in bed and fell into a deep sleep, happy with the knowledge that the worst of the AT was made and dusty.
