Football club Leipzig said one of its fans died on Tuesday after a medical incident during the German Cup match against Energie Cottbus.
Leipzig posted X that the supporter became ill upon entering the stadium and later died in a medical clinic. The incident happened «without outside interference,» the club said.
“At the moment, football is fading into the background,” Leipzig added.
Cottbus said the person collapsed as non-resident supporters entered the stadium and died on the way to hospital.
The atmosphere at the Cottbus Stadium was hushed as supporters of both clubs refrained from chanting following an announcement about the incident. Leipzig won 4-1.
