A zero in Dubois – The Trek

Lying in a crib in the community room of the Episcopal Church of San Thomas, it is 5 in the morning and the dream eludes me. Okay since we have to be outside at 6:15 anyway. I imagine I will be awake.

The church of San Thomas in Dubois Wyoming, up to eight hikers or cyclists, stay in their community room in free cribs! There is a suggested donation of $ 5. They have a hiker box where people can leave equipment or foods that they no longer use or take what they need. Tonight the room is full.

Come to the city

Yesterday I arrived in the city after walking 19.5 miles to the highway 26. The road crosses the division to about 9,000 feet. I take off my backpack and stay with my thumb while cars pass. He feels so discouraging. A man shrugs with his hands in the air on both sides of him. Another gives me a thumb up at that time waves. I am not sure why, but it angry a little when people return a thumb up. I guess they are mocking me.

After approximately half an hour, Steve de Lander, who was climbing in the Tetons, stops. Thanks to the Lord.

We chat on the walk, where we are, wildlife and tastes until we arrive at a service station in the city. The employee is outside smoking and asked if he knows where the church is that hikers stay there. He does it and points to me in the right direction.

Homeless

I enter and buy a sprite and then I feel outside with my back against the wall drinking and looking at what is in the city. I feel that people give me looks. When you have 8 days without shower, dirty, little thought enters the place where you feel, I am happy to be out of my feet.

I find the church number and talk to a good lady who takes the name of my path and explains where the building is in which I will stay. She mentions that there is a breakfast the next day and I will have to leave at 6:15 am, no problem.

City tasks

After leaving most of my things in the church, I am heading to wash my clothes and a shower. Swpping My Credit Card gives me 5 minutes of water for $ 2.50. The water is not hot. I start with my feet and calves, but finally enter completely. After 2 minutes, the temperature increases. Rub and wash quickly so as not to have to pay another water round. I was able to find soap and conditioner left by other users. Rough? Perhaps, but what is acceptable and what is unacceptable changes drastically through the life of normal life.

I change my rain team after drying with my fleece. Dressed in blue, I make a change and start the washing. He goes to the next service station, I buy corn and chocolate cheese popcorn.

After the laundry is performed, it is time for adequate meal. The pizza has been in my mind, so I go to Noon Rock Pizza and ask for a great smoked Joe. Chicken, bacon, onion, barbecue sauce and cheese. Slowly but surely, I devour everything. If they had sold milkshakes, one would have obtained.

Go to church

Back in the church, I notice free of being and samurai outside on a picnic table eating. I address to greet and both give me a hug. That is the first hug I have received in 43 days! After catching up a little, as much as it can be done with 2 native Japanese speakers, I go to bed. There are two bicycle girls throughout the United States. I make a small talk and ask ourselves questions about our different trips. It is fun to meet people doing different but similar adventurous things.

When my nails trim, two hikers enter before I have not met. Shot, a notice (North Bound hiker), and Matcha, a sobo (south bound hiker like me). It is curious how we click more instantly and start talking about equipment, trails, food and other shared but different experiences.

Another hiker appears, the modesty, whom I met in Leadorae, and I say that I thought you would be very ahead. He made the red line to West Yellowstone, where when I took the Mac in court, shaving about 40 miles from the path. He also took a zero today and would leave tomorrow.

Time for the bed and remember that the snoring of modesty, put the outbreaks of the ear and light the rain sounds. The crib is comfortable enough and I’m going to sleep. It is not the best sleep night, but at least it was cheap.

Up and in them

The next morning, everyone leaves and leaves the church at 6:15 am. We are distributed by the property of the Church and receive them that those who come to church breakfast should be a normal fact for them.

I stand up to go to Cowboy Cafe. Oh, I feel again. There is a strange pain in the stomach, an oppression. I decide to drink more water with the hope that it is dehydrated. Let’s try this again. The pains are still there, but slowly on the street and I find coffee. There are already several motorcyclists waiting for the restaurant to open.

By the time they open at 7 am, there are at least 15 people hitting the door, popular place.

I and 3 other hikers have a table and start drinking coffee and chatting. It is curious how the path may seem so empty, but when you enter the city you find all kinds of hikers. I ask for a little smaller breakfast for fear of my stomach pain. Sometimes, while walking, my stomach acts weird, avoiding eating a lot even while it is in a severe calorie deficit.

The food comes and I am grateful to say that I could eat and the pain in my belly decreased.

Magic of the people

I have a coffee to go and find a bank outside to hang out. Shot sits on the bank next to me and before I realize, someone asks us if we are CDT hikers. «Yes, we are!»

«Would you like to attack our hiker box in our car?»

«Well, of course we would do it!»

Three people had just finished hiking and had many foods. One of them was a triple Corwner and saw us a mile away. It governs us through their leftovers and we go out with some decent articles. We chat for a while about hiking. I even remembered taking a picture.
