AFC Champions League 2: FC GOA loses to Al Zawraa from Iraq in group opener


FC Goa started his AFC Champions League 2 Group Stage campaign with a 2-0 defeat against the Iraqi club Al-Zairaa SC in the Fatorda Stadium in Goa on Wednesday.

The Gaurs had some chances during the game, with players like Borja Herrera and Dejan Drazic to create opportunities, but they could not convert. Al Zawaa took the lead just before half -time, with striker Reziq Bani Hani scored in the 44th minute. This goal gave the visitor a crucial boost of confidence on the way to the break.

In the second half it was all FC Goa when the home team tried to find an equalizer, in which players such as Drazic and Brison Fernandes created opportunities. However, they did not take up their chances.

The Iraqi side sealed his victory in stopping time. Nizar al-Rashdan scored the second goal for Al Zawaa in the 4th minute of the stopping time and achieved a 2-0 win.

While FC Goa showed moments of attacking promise, the clinical finish of the visitor and the solid defense turned out to be the difference. This result places FC Goa a heavy group at the bottom that also includes Saudi-Arab club Al-Nassr FC, captain by Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Gaurs will have to regroup and concentrate on their upcoming road against Tajikistan Side FC Istiklol on October 1.
