AIFF Super Cup: Kerala Blasters hoping for a perfect record; Mumbai City chases goals from Pereyra Diaz, Ortiz

It’s not over until it’s over – Kerala Blasters learned it with a late winner against Rajasthan United FC in the first AIFF Super Cup.

They will now look to have the same momentum when they face Sporting Club Delhi in the next group match at the GMC Athletic Stadium here on Monday.

KBFC’s new signings Koldo Obieta and Juan Rodriguez will be the usual suspects for an attack, with the two involved in the only goal against Rajasthan.

But David Catala could deploy more goalscoring options with Noah Sadaoui in his side, especially against a team coming into the match on the back of a 1-4 defeat to Mumbai City FC.

There could be six foreigners in the Super Cup, and Obieta and Sadaoui, with captain Adrian Luna, could be the treble for the three-time Indian Super League (ISL) finalists.

Another interesting subplot in the match features Delhi head coach Tomasz Tchorz facing off against his former side. The Pole was head of youth development at the KBFC before taking on the position of assistant coach last season.

Delhi, on the other hand, expect Andre Alba to continue his form in a new kit. The Spaniard has scored just three times in 15 games for Delhi’s former avatar, Hyderabad FC. But in Delhi’s first-ever competitive match, he found the net, albeit on a losing cause, against Mumbai City.

In the other Group D match, the Islanders will take on Rajasthan, a side that showed they were no slouch in the match against KBFC.

Under coach Vikrant Sharma and with the experience of Harmanjot Khabra, Rajasthan will be in a battle for survival at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium against the ISL heavyweight.

Mumbai, meanwhile, have re-signed their key striker Jorge Pereyra Diaz, who spent a season with Bengaluru before returning this summer. Pereyra Diaz has scored 12 or more goals in each of his last three seasons, scoring on his return against Delhi.

He will partner Jorge Ortiz in the final third, who returns to Goa after four years, having previously played for the Gaurs. He also marked his return with a goal in the 4-1 win.

The two could pose a threat to Rajasthan, who will be playing without suspended defender Gursimrat Singh Gill.

Mumbai City’s build-up features Vikram Partap Singh and Lallianzuala Chhangte down the flanks, while Jon Toral calls the shots in attack from the center of the park, a strategy similar to what the side had used in the match against Delhi.

Both matches start at the same time, and a draw in both matches or a win for Mumbai City will help the Islanders stay at the top of the table.

If KBFC win and Mumbai drop points, the final round of the games will determine the winner and the resulting semi-finalist from the group.
