Ajax has condemned the fireworks show by supporters in the Johan Cruijff Arena, which led to the cancellation of the Eredivisie match against Groningen on Sunday, and says it will take action against the perpetrators.
Some supporters lit fireworks and flares behind one of the goalposts, causing the referee to stop the game after the first five minutes. The attempts to restart the game were met with similar scenes and the game was officially shut down.
“Ajax finds what happened in the stadium tonight absolutely scandalous,” the Amsterdam club said in a statement on its website.
«We apologize to anyone affected in any way. The safety of spectators and players has been compromised. This is unacceptable. We emphatically distance ourselves from this misconduct. Fireworks have no place in the stadium,» it added.

The club added that despite the security measures in place, it could not prevent the incident and will investigate the footage to identify the perpetrators.
“If this leads to the identification of offenders, we will take appropriate action,” the club said.
Ajax announced that the match will now be played behind closed doors on Tuesday. It is currently sixth with 20 points from 13 games in the Dutch league.
