Allagash Waterway Part 5-Rip-N-Ready (ECT 216)

«The Rolls River and the River winds

And it seems to do something

For my tranquility

Although I didn’t know

I came here looking to find

A place to forget my problems for a while …

I spend a lot of time looking forward

Looking back and looking at my feet on the floor

I fell back and when I opened my eyes

I found myself looking directly in the sky

And it seemed that there was something to learn

When I realized that I didn’t have to be any other place

And the only sound that mattered was the wind that blows so gentle through the trees

Such harmony on the river «

We launched at 7:30 am, 4 minutes before yesterday. Sheesh, we continue to win in the efficiency category. Breakfast was a apple cinnamon oatmeal with an arce package and brown sugar cream of mixed wheat. I was fog as yesterday, maybe even more, and our tents were full of condensation. The exterior of my store was actually dry, but the interior covered with moisture.

We start, we remote near the coast to finish the remaining stretch of round pond. We thought that if we ventured out of view of the fog, we would have lost ourselves for any sense of direction.

Looking at the map, this seemed to be our last lake or pond or a wide open water body of the trip, the rest would be a river. How that was seen, either because of dead water/Slackwater or Rapids, we were not sure.

Near the pinch point and the transition from the pond to the fast water, simultaneously we witnessed a large cow and a calf hall and a couple of otters leave the fog. The Moosens quickly came out of the water to the forest this time, but we were lucky to see the otes for a while while swimming and moved away further from us …

Starting this morning, we both surprised us a bit of jumping directly to the action with riffle after riffle. This was labeled as Rounds Pond Rips in my application, a series of class 1 rapids we quickly took a step, every small race feeling as one of the speed increases in Mario Kart for 64 (or the elegant that my nieces have for the Nintendo Switch today). Then, Dad expressed something like: «I have not touched my coffee … I would end with an attack and I have to prepare for the next one.»

Unfortunately, I was not willing to risk my telephone byboard during any of the most choppy things, so once again there are no real images of the rapids.

It was a fun morning. Personally I felt comfortable in class 1 sections. In fact, I was stuck once or twice, once I had to get out of kayak and walk it, but in general it is not so much a terrifying and frustrating experience. I think we both feel that we are improving to read the river and find the deepest and most clean running roads. Even so, it cannot be denied that we are still fond here. Here Dad also offered some idea, saying that it was: «One morning that tried all our skills.»

Difficult to say, but another bald eagle hides there in the shadows.

The next was a slower water. We were about 45 minutes until we reached the Musquacook current, where we stopped, stopped and glued the Yaks.

Up to this point, we have not really had many accessible tax currents. We expected that we could find one with colder water to see if that would excite the stream trout and also only for a little colder water to filter and drink. Musquacook arrived with the coldest water; It was remarkably colder for touch, but did not produce any trout. Instead, we catch several more of the Sucker species that we have been calling «Shiners.»

I am sure that the tails were close to the sub-40 degrees Fahrenheit after cooling in this natural refrigerator that I created.

Three other miles or less we find a camp for lunch. All this river route has a large number of large camps that until now have seemed in good condition. Some may have been a bit lumpy and inclined, but the tables and fire wells have been premium. Therefore, this was a great place of lunch shaded and we enjoyed our usual snacks. However, to add some variety, we had the classic coca-cool refrigerated and these things of roasted meat in tortillas.

Drying stores was a daily routine for us.

When we left lunch, we had approximately 8 miles to get to the Michaud Farm guardian station. We got on the rhythm and focused on our river reading. Several times we do not read it well and end up cutting and sliding cobblestones and rocks to pass. Sometimes, each one stuck at such shallow points that they required to leave the kayak and walk to a little more. Most of the time, we had the feeling of the current and saw a path through the maze of gravel bars and rock gardens.

I think Dad was testing some new techniques in the video with extremely high palette extensions 😅

It was complicated and tense, but also fun, especially some of the races that had great «S» curves where we shot through «Smooth Like Butta», how Jackie Chan, the legendary Kayakista of Aguas Blancas once described his perfect career.

Docked on the beach of Michaud Farger Ranger Station.

Speaking to the Cynthia rangers (?), We obtained information about forward and decided to continue towards our goal of reaching the end of the river path of Allagash Wilderness. I am not sure how much I have already explained, but being drought conditions, the river discharge levels are quite low and that is a large part of why we have had so much problem. Previously, we had heard rumors that the last 16 miles would be more or less. Here, we listen differently, that the last bit we had arrived was the most superficial. And so, we thought we could do it. After talking, we headed to row a few more miles before reaching the camp.

We did some good clean races and the 3 miles to Allagash Falls Portage and our camp was very fast. Although dad and I feel quite well with our maneuver today, everyone behaves these falls. There were some different warning signs in advance that came out of the water or imminent face!

«Danger … falls ahead … Stay well for Portage

It’s hard to read, but says «Portage … all parties must carry«

Despite our exhaustion, we decided to take the kayaks the 0.2 miles on the other side of the cataracts tonight instead of the next morning. And we obtained all our team and things in our camp. Taking Karl and Ellie, Dad went to the front with each hand gripped around the handles of the two kayaks and I did the same on the back. In this way, we did the thing on a trip, although we stopped about 5 times to rest.

Tonight we had Spaghetti, which was one of the meals that was most excited (it did not disappoint). With our last tail too, it was spectacular! And then we still had some energy to explore both above and below the cataracts. They were very impressive and beautiful. The rocks also took care of us as quite twisted.

Around 8:00 pm we arrived at stores and once again we were absolutely drained and ready to sleep.
