Segment 9 could probably be summarized with «Rocky Trail and Green Tunnel», however, I don’t think it gives enough credit to the Holy Cross Wilderness area. Seriously, this segment began very well with a soft path and forest on both sides. Then he turned to a rock disaster on a path. Do not be misunderstood, it is very well cared for, I am simply not a fan of small to medium rocks, unequally creating a path that could break the ankle.
It is not that there is a hard line when you reach wild areas. It is a sign next to the road, but getting into the Holy Cross, you could simply say. It has such a resistant beauty about it. It also has some very steep climbs. STEEP. At least he had something nice to look while fighting for the mountain. There were also some beautiful lakes, but I didn’t have time to stop and check them. I had to go to my friends!
Friendly faces
Jamie and Kevin picked me up from Timberline Lake Trailhead at the end of segment 9. I was exhausted, but definitely ready to see some friendly faces. We drove the mountain to find our camp that Jamie had chosen. It was beautiful. They had all the snacks that I could desire for me, in addition to a bigger sandwich than my head. He updated us, we played the cards and went to bed early.
That camp that Jamie chose? He was right next to the road to the Leadville 100 race around 4 in the morning, most of the runners began to arrive. We listen a lot of breath and the same amount of crying. It was fun to hear, but we definitely do not sleep very well. We decided to get up for the day around 6 am to return to the beginning of the path. They joined me for segments 10 and 11!
Hiking with friends
Segment 10 was quite cold and cruise, so this was a perfect place for Kevin’s introduction to the backpack in Colorado, and Jamie’s first time in the CT. There were many water crosses, so we never had to carry a lot of extra weight. Kevin even walked barefoot for a while, the path was very pleasant. We got into the camp about 12 miles in the segment and spent the night playing the cards together.
Segment 11 was also quite well. We move on Mount Massive Wilderness and overlook all the 14er options. Those are for another day. We took the bypass to Twin Lakes so that a friend of mine could pick us up and take us back to Leadville (thank you Sunni)!
I ended up taking two days zero with them in Buena Vista. We had good food, good coffee, some hot springs and some tourists. A couple of my ampoules even cured, yes! The weather was too fast, and before I was ready (mentally, anyway), they left me in Cottonwood Pass.
