Liverpool -Manager Arne Slot wrote an emotional tribute to Diogo Jota, after the Liverpool attacker and his brother, André Silva, died on Thursday in a car accident in Spain.
«What to say? What can someone say at the moment if the shock and the pain are so incredibly raw? I wish I had the words, but I know I don’t do that,» said Slot.
«My first thoughts are not those of a football manager. They are from a father, a son, a brother and an uncle, and they belong to the family of Diogo and Andre Silva, who have experienced such an unimaginable loss,» said the Dutch manager.
Jota, who initially played for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, moved to Liverpool, where he had his best professional Stint. He won the FA Cup and League Cup under Manager Jurgen Klopp before winning in the Premier League in the 2024/25 season.
«I could say so much about what he brought to our team, but the truth is that anyone who saw Diogo game playing, could see it. Hard work, desire, dedication, great quality and goals. The essence of what a Liverpool player should be,» said Slot.
«When I came to the club for the first time, one of the first songs I learned to know the one who sing our fans for Diogo. I had never worked with him before, but I knew immediately that if the Liverpool supporters, who saw so many amazing players over the years, had such a unique singing for Diogo, he must have special qualities,» he said.
The 28-year-old was also part of the Portugal team that the UEFA Nations League won in 2019 and 2025. «The last time we spoke, I congratulated Diogo on winning the Nations League and wished him happiness for his upcoming wedding. In many respects it was a dream for Diogo and his family, which is more heartfit.»
«If time is ripe, we will celebrate Diogo Jota, we will remember his goals, and we will sing his song. For the time being we will remember him as a unique person and mourning for his loss. He will never be forgotten.»
