Arsenal boss Arteta expresses his sadness over Amorim’s dismissal from Manchester United

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said on Wednesday he was “sad” when rival boss Ruben Amorim was sacked by Manchester United as he reflected on the brazen nature of their dealings.

Amorim was sacked by the Premier League giants on Monday after just 14 months in charge.

The Portuguese coach’s departure followed rising tensions with senior Old Trafford officials, including director of football Jason Wilcox, in recent days.

United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe had previously suggested Amorim would be in charge for at least three years, comparing his position to that of Arteta.

The Spaniard, appointed in 2019, has had a rocky start to his time as Arsenal manager but now goes into Thursday’s match at home against reigning champions Liverpool six points clear at the top of the Premier League as the country chases its first English title in more than two decades.

United, on the other hand, are sixth – a huge 17 points behind the Gunners.

Amorim won just 25 of his 63 games at United in all competitions during the shortest reign for a permanent manager since David Moyes was sacked in 2014 just eight months into his tenure.

«I can only talk about what I have experienced and of course it is always sad to see a colleague lose his job,» Arteta told reporters at a pre-match press conference.

“We know where we are and I think you need support from ownership, from your staff, from players.

“At the end of the day, you have to win a lot of football games if you want to stay in this job, and that is the reality and the nature of our job.”
