Arsenal vs Manchester City League Cup Final Preview – What can you expect from the Carabao Cup top clash?

When Arsenal and Manchester City face off in the League Cup final at Wembley, there will be more at stake than just a trophy: a significant morale boost as the Premier League title race goes down to the wire.

Nine points separate master Pep Guardiola from his pupil Mikel Arteta in the league with just eight games remaining.

Several factors will play a role in the League Cup top-flight clash, starting with whether Erling Haaland breaks his Wembley curse.

Since the turn of the year, Haaland has suffered a slump which has subsequently affected City’s form. After scoring nineteen goals in the league up to Christmas, the Norwegian managed just three in thirteen games in 2026, two of which came from the penalty spot.

Despite scoring five goals and two assists in nine games against Arsenal, he has yet to find the back of the net in six games at Wembley.

However, the 25-year-old’s nerves will be somewhat eased after he scored City’s only goal in the last-16 tie against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League. Furthermore, unlike in recent weeks, he actually managed to make his presence felt, taking seven shots (five on target) in just 56 minutes in the second leg, most of which were denied by some fantastic stops from Thibaut Courtois.

With 29.1 percent of City’s goals in all competitions coming from Haaland, the striker will need to polish off recent performances if they are to break through Arsenal’s resolute backline.

Depth of squad in wealth

A major reason for City’s success over the past decade has been the availability of quality players, both on the pitch and on the bench. So it’s no surprise that Arsenal have managed to take on or even beat Manchester after their transfer activity in recent seasons.

Eberechi Eze, Martin Zubimendi and Viktor Gyokeres are some of the names who joined the London club over the summer, transforming the club into a versatile team that already boasts bona fide stars such as Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba and Martin Odegaard.

Meanwhile, following the departure of key names such as Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, Kyle Walker and others, Guardiola is struggling to build a core group with his latest signings.

This was evident in the most recent draw against relegation-battling West Ham United, where City lacked creativity in the middle after Guardiola opted to play without an attacking midfielder despite Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reinjders being on the bench.

On the other hand, Arteta has been effective in managing his team with 12 players scoring four or more goals compared to City’s seven. Furthermore, Arsenal have had eleven goals and ten assists scored by players coming off the bench in the league, while City have contributed just two goals off the bench.

Can City limit Arsenal’s set-piece ability?

It’s no secret that Arsenal have been kings of set pieces this season, with 19 goals from dead-ball situations, including 16 from corners alone, a joint Premier League record. Meanwhile, City sit at the other end of the stats table with just seven goals from set-pieces.

However, Guardiola’s side will take some comfort from the fact that they have only conceded nine goals in such situations, while also managing to keep out Arsenal’s efforts when the two sides met in the league earlier in the season.

With Guardiola confirming James Trafford will start in goal in the final, the 23-year-old will need to be at the top of his game if he is to win the ball amid the constant pressure Arsenal have put on teams this season ihfs.

Arsenal will also be boosted by being unbeaten against City in their last six games in all competitions (two wins and four draws) after losing 15 of their previous 16 matches.

At the same time, City will look to break their streak of losing in grand finals following defeats to Crystal Palace and Manchester United in the FA Cup in the previous two seasons. But it will take courage knowing they have won eight of nine League Cup finals, including seven on the trot since the defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1974.
