Arsenal lifted the biggest financial prize in women’s football history by beating Corinthians 3-2 after extra time to win the first FIFA Women’s Champions Cup on Sunday.
The European champions overcame the challenge of Brazilian underdogs thanks to Caitlin Foord’s winner who collected a $2.3 million payout.
That is almost four times the €500,000 Arsenal received for winning last season’s Champions League.
The Gunners were heavy favorites to secure the trophy that would see the winners of the champions from six continents compete together in competition for the first time.
However, Corinthians shocked US champions Gotham FC in Wednesday’s semi-finals, pushing Arsenal all the way in front of more than 25,000 spectators at the Emirates Stadium.

Vic Albuquerque fired home from the penalty spot after Gisela Robledo was tripped in the penalty area.
However, Arsenal’s greater strength in depth was reflected in extra time, when Foord sneaked a shot in at the near post to finally break Corinthians’ spirit.
