Arsenal’s Gyokeres eyes Premier League success after Champions League double

Viktor Gyokeres says he is keen to respond to manager Mikel Arteta’s call to take his goal-scoring momentum into the Premier League after Tuesday’s impressive performance against Atletico Madrid.

Striker Gyokeres ended a run of seven games without a goal by scoring twice in Arsenal’s 4-0 defeat to Atleti in the Champions League at the Emirates Stadium.

The 27-year-old’s tally for the Gunners reached five goals following his £58 million ($77 million) transfer from Sporting Lisbon, where he scored 97 times in 102 appearances.

Gunners boss Arteta challenged Gyokeres to keep the goals coming as Arsenal returned to action at home against London rivals Crystal Palace in the Emirates on Sunday.

“I’m hungrier now,” Gyokeres said. «You always want to contribute with work rate and other things, but when you also score goals, that’s a bit special. So that’s something I always want to do.»

“The group we have and the spirit is something different and something very special.

«When you win games and deliver these performances, it builds confidence in the team. The belief always has to be there, but of course this helps to give it a boost. We just want to keep going.»

Arsenal have won their three games in Europe so far this season by as many clean sheets.

The north London side have conceded just three goals this season, away to champions Liverpool and Newcastle and at home to Manchester City, with only one coming from open play in their first twelve games.

After the match, the Swedish striker said: «We are looking at winning big trophies,» when former Arsenal star Thierry Henry asked him during a post-match broadcast about his ambitions for the season and what a successful season means for the team.

Premier League top Arsenal enter this weekend’s round of matches with a three-point lead over second-placed Manchester City.

Liverpool is one point further.
