Athletic Bilbao player Yeray Álvarez says that he has been suspended for the time being after the failure of a forbidden drug test due to taking a drug to prevent hair loss caused by cancer treatment.
The Spanish defender said on Thursday in a social media post that he had been informed «a few weeks ago» that he had failed a drug test after Athletic had lost in the European League in the Europa League in May in May in May.
Álvarez, now 30, had to step away from football for a few months in 2017 to treat testicular cancer.
He says that after his return to play since then he has used medicines to combat alopecia and that the cause of his positive result was on the doping test because he «involuntarily took a medicine to prevent hair loss from containing a forbidden substance.»
«The news (of my ban) has been a hard blow and one that I could not believe, given that I never consumed forbidden substances in my life,» he said.
He said his case is still in the first phase and that his suspension is for the time being.
Athletic said it «complained of Yeray’s human mistake and will give him all his support.»
Athletic will play in the Champions League next season.
